Royal on top at Regatta

Royal College Colombo came out on top at the inaugural Sri Lanka Schools Rowing Regatta 2012 which was held at the Beira Lake in Colombo last weekend. Royal oarsmen won overall trophies in the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 age categories, an achievemen­t made by the contributi­on by it's dedicated crew members.

In the Under- 18 age category Chamal Gomes and Amrith Fernando finished first in the pairs while Keshan Ranasinghe and Lahiru Herath from the same crew finished at second following close behind. Uvin Siriwarden­a and Pramod Rajaguru was placed second in the double scull event. Also in the fours event where Chamal Gomes, Uvin Siriwarden­a, Pramod Rajaguru, Amrith Fernando and Szlan Sourjah paddled, Royal became second.

In the Under- 16 age category Heshan Hettigoda, Kavinda Mathews, Amr Sideek, Kaveen Rajapakse and Avishka Jayaweera won the fours event for Royal. Amr Sidiik and Kaveen Rajapakse also went on to win the double scull event while Bilal Hassen came on top in the scull event.

In the Under- 14 age c a t e g o r y, H a s h e n Hettigoda and Ishira Rambukwela claimed the victory of the double scull event while Jehan Sandeep and R. Karunasund­ara followed to finish at third. Upek Kuruppu finished the sculls event at second. In addition Royal became third in the Under- 20 fours and pairs events. The inaugural rowing event for schools was organised by the Schools Rowing Associatio­n with the collaborat­ion of Colombo Rowing Club.
