AIS emerges as a strong contender in schools’ rowing winning 3 golds, 3 silver & 2 bronze medals at the national championships
The Lumbini College Rugby Awards for the year 2012 was held at the school’s auditorium ‘Lumbini Hall’ on Wednesday. The event which recognised the efforts of the rugby players of all age groups who represented Lumbini College this season was held amidst a good participation and a colourful cultural show. The school and its rugby officials awarded four teams of three different age categories who helped Lumbini emerge victorious at tournaments organised by the Western Province and Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Associations.
The Inaugural Schools’ National Rowing Championships were held on 15th September at the Colombo Rowing Club. It was a spectacular event with 26 finals held amidst some intense racing among ten top schools in the island.
Ladies’ College and Royal College
The teams that received awards were the Under-14 ‘B’ team that won the Western Province Bowl Championship, the Under-14 ‘A’ team who won the Plate Championship at the same event, the Under-16 team who won the Shield Championship at this year’s All-Island competition and their Under-18 team who won a double, the runners-up titles in the Plate segment of the Western Province tournament and in the Shield championship at the All-Island championship. were the overall champions in the final standing of the girls and boys categories respectively. Ladies’ College won 14 medals – 6 gold, 7 silver & 1 bronze; while Royal College won 13 medals – 5 gold, 4 silver & 4 bronze.
The emergence of the Asian International School team as a strong contender in the boys category is noteworthy.
In the overall championship they finished a very worthy second in the final standing, winning 6 medals – 2 gold, 3 silver & 1 bronze.
The AIS girls’ team also won 2 medals – 1 gold & 1 bronze.
