Chamathsar­a and Virunaka shine

- (BM) Most outstandin­g Player of the Tournament ( Girls ) Chamathsar­a Fernando of Girls High School , Mt Lavinia

Chamathsar­a Fernando of Girl’s High School, Mount Lavinia and Virunaka Hendahewa of Royal College were the most outstandin­g players at the Western Province Open Ranking Table Tennis Championsh­ips, conducted by the I & D Table Tennis Academy at the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Stadium recently.

In the final of the women’s Singles Chamathsar­a Fernando although losing the first set to Hansani Piumila of Anula Vidyalaya, came back to win the next two sets. Earlier in the tournament, she defeated Kithmadie Ranawaka of Visakha Vidyalaya in the in two straight sets to win the under 15 Singles championsh­ip to claim a double.

In the boys’ segment, Virunika Hendahewa also claimed a double by defeating Nimesh Ranchagoda also of Royal College in a two setter in the under 12 boys’ singles category and Sandesh Nissanka of Ananda College in in a the U-14 finals grueling three setter.

In the boys’ Under 10 singles, Dewmith Weerasena of Lyceum Internatio­nal School, Nugegoda also pulled off a double when he won the final of the under 10 boys’ singles beating A.Z. Chitty of S. Thomas’ College and teaming up with Lithmanama of Wesley College to win the under 12 doubles over Virunaka Hendahewa and Nimesh Ranchagoda of Royal College.

Sandesh Nissanka of Ananda College also claimed a double by winning the boys under 18 singles over Rumal Intikab of Royal College and then partnered with Intikab to win the under 15 doubles by beating Upeksha Gihan and M.A. Ashkar, both of Royal College.
