Galle hosts inaugural Golden Flea Market

The community of Galle, in collaborat­ion with the Galle Heritage Foundation, will celebrate the Fort’s time-honoured role as a global cultural and trading hub at the city’s inaugural Golden Flea Market. The market is an open-air, free-for-all bazaar that will take place on Sunday, December 16 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. in the Law Court Square.

Trades people and creative folk will be selling and exhibiting an eclectic mix of wares including Afghan rugs, Amazonian mosquito repellent, antiques, aromathera­py oils, baby clothes, batik art, beading, books, bric-a-brac, brioche, bunting, canvas art, candles, coconuts, chutneys, Christmas cakes, cards, puddings and decoration­s, cushions, designer brand t- shirts and dresses, elderflowe­r cordial, fairy lights, handmade soaps, herbs, kids’ clothes, hand bags, jams, jewellery, lace ware, lamps, mirrors, mince pies, pates, photograph­y, pure organic fair trade food products, puppets (including puppet shows), recycled jewellery and shopping bags, rotis, sweets, teas, teriyaki chicken, toys, vintage clothes and woodwork.

The organisers say shoppers and stallholde­rs from all over the island are welcome and there is no deadline for entry. “You can just turn up on the day and receive a stall space from the Galle Heritage Foundation in exchange for a Rs. 500 donation towards their crucial fund for restoratio­n and preservati­on of the Fort.”

Stall spaces, rental tables (100 rupees for the day), chairs (30 rupees) and a limited supply of umbrellas and sun hats will be available on a first come first serve basis, the news release adds.
