To their tenth outright win

The Under 19 inter-school cricket season has almost ended with the league tournament matches of all the four groups completed and now there are only a few friendly or traditiona­l games left to be played.

But Richmond College Galle continued their winning spree when they coasted to their tenth outright of season with an eight wicket win over St. Thomas Matara. This was one of the four outright wins that were recorded in the matches played over the weekend, which were traditiona­l matches.

The other outright wins recor- ded were Dharmasoka MV Ambalangod­a securing a seven wicket win against Sri Sumangala Panadura, Gurukula MV Kelaniya getting the better of President’s College Rajagiriya by 110 runs and St Sebastian’s Katuneriya playing in the division two securing a stunning nine wicket win over Dehiwela Central who are playing in the division one category.

Meanwhile Richmond slotted in Group ‘B’ ended their tournament on top by securing seven outright wins from the eight matches that they have to play. Their tournament wins were against Ananda, Dharmasoka MV, Maliyadeva, St. Servatius Matara, Dharmaraja, Dehiwela Central and Revatha MMV Balapitiya while Royal Panadura was the only team to escape.

In second place in that group was Dharmasoka MV who finished with five outright wins. St. Peter’s secured four outright wins which saw them come out on top in Group ‘D’ while the other two groups has not been finalised due to the score sheets not been sent by the respective teams.

The week ending also saw two cricketers reach the milestone of 1000 runs and 100 wickets for the season. Thurstan skipper Ramindu Kumarasing­he became the second player to reach 1000 runs which he achieved in the match against Dharmapala.

The left hand batsman needed 16 runs when he came into the match against Dharmapala and reached the milestone in his 17th match. His 1000 runs comprised three tons and four half tons with an unbeaten 128 against Sri Sumangala Panadura as his best.

The bowling feat was achieved by Dharmasoka MV’s right arm spinner Yohan de Silva. Yohan came into the match against Sri Sumangala Panadura needing five wickets to reach the milestone which he did with a match bag of six wickets.

Meanwhile the Under 19 limited over tournament which got underway on March 12 is in full swing and there have been some shocking wins recorded by lesser known teams over fancied outfits.

The limited over tournament which has previously been playing on a knockout basis has now been changed and it is first played over league where 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four teams contesting.

The 32 teams in the division one category along with 16 teams from the division two are contesting the tournament. The tournament got underway with Holy Cross defeating St. John’s Panadura by four wickets.

St. Peter’s cruised through to an easy 104 runs win over Maliyadeva which also saw Lahiru Milantha cracking the first ton of the tournament when he made an unbeaten 112.

The biggest shock was recorded by lesser known Dharmaloka MV Kelaniya who secured a stunning six wicket win over Dharmapala while President’s Rajagiriya posted the highest total when they made 318 for 8 against St. Anne’s Kurunegala which they won by 103 runs.
