To ensure a secure job placement soon after completing ones education is everyone’s dream. While for some this might pose much trouble, for some others like Mohamed Saleem, getting a job soon after completing his education was an easy pass.

Thanks to following a course at Informatics Institute of Technology ( IIT), the pioneer in British Education in Sri Lanka with a reputation for being among the best in higher education in the avenues of IT and Business Management, students are now able to pursue qualifications that are on par with world standards and is accepted worldwide for its content, quality and skill development.

Students are also taught valuable soft skills such as communication and presentation skills as well as team building experiences which perceptibly are vital for working in an office environment.

Commenting on this, Saleem said: “The communication skills taught at IIT encompassed a range of individual competencies including listening, speaking clearly, and presentation skills.” These communication skills are essential for pursuing career goals and increasing individual value at work. “This I believe were the first step in leveraging competencies for my career advancement.”

“Many businesses rely on successful teamwork to reach company goals and objectives. While more organizations have gone global, good teamwork has become increasingly imperative since employees with differing skill sets and ideas may be scattered on different continents.” Circumstances may call for these global employees to share what information they have in each location in order to strategise, innovate, and bring to market a company’s products or services. “I felt the value of the skills I learned on teamwork when I worked at Timex garments and had to work in teams and lead projects to completion. The knowledge I gained also helped in dealing with different calibres of people which were our buyers from many part in the world,” he expressed. During his placement year, Saleem managed to bag a position at Brandix Mercury as a Trainee handling management accounting for the company. He got his first experience on corporate culture which latterly helped him in adjusting and settling down fast when he began working.

He did his final year project also in an area that interested him, which were gar ments. The final year project consisted of assessing the effects of the apparel industry in Sri Lanka after the abolition of the quota system.

Saleem commenced his career at Timex gar ments as a Trainee Merchandiser, and within two years moved to the position of Assistant Manager. Within the next three years he went on to become Operations Manager handling two of the outputs and two factories and a workforce of over 1000 people.

He was subsequently promoted to the position of General Manager and then eventually left to work on his own for Foreign Exchange ( FOREX) Trading.

Today his work consists of advising high profile clients of many leading industries on currency trading.

“The knowledge I gained at IIT was what I believed help me support myself in the initial stages of work. At the conclusion of my qualification I had grown both as a human and a businessman. I would recommend to ambitious students who would like to climb the corporate ladder and perhaps venture on their own to pursue education at IIT,” Saleem expressed.
