Strategic Marketing driving Sri Lankan Businesses

- Amar. A. Gunasekara, Business Development Manager, Wijaya Newspapers Ltd Jimmy Deen, Director Real Radio, Real Entertainment (Pvt) Ltd

Do marketers understand business? Marketers need to earn their respect in the boardroom and identify gaps in boardroom skills and competencies. The modern marketer may need to master the skill of measuring marketing more effectively and be metric, dashboard or ratio oriented in an attempt to move away from being a mere creative genius and progress to being accountable, responsible marketers. “Marketing finance” is a new term coined to bridge this divide.

A handful of marketers gauge the financial impact of their marketing strategies and are not familiar with analytics, predictive and measurement tools such as the balance score card, decision trees, predictive modelling (multiple regression analysis), time series analysis, scenario planning, hypothesis testing and marketing ratio’s such as ROMI (the Return On Marketing Investment). They prefer to choose power point rather than excel to present a business case and fail to effectively project their creative ideas into commercial business opportunities.

The Executive MSc at Strategy provided me with both academic theory and practical business experience. Classes were structured in a very interactive manner allowing me to learn from; the most intelligent and innovative in the field as well as my qualified peers. The intensity and breadth of the programme prepares you for complex problem solving in the work place, high pressure situations and a practical take on day to day work. The small classroom size brought about a very personal interaction. This seemed to help me the most when completing my dissertation and has led to me graduating in Malaysia next month.

Working and studying simultaneously is not an easy task. However, I am glad I made the decision to take up the Executive MSc in Strategic Marketing. The Executive MSc was educationally stimulating and empowering at the same time. I gained specific knowledge on sharpening my organisations strategic focus as well as my career. The quality of faculty is world class and the programme is designed on today’s business practices, real world business cases and current research findings. It is by far one of the best investments I have made!
