Debarawewa and Pinnawela girls steal the show at Sepaktakra­w

Five women’s teams featured on the opening day of the Sepaktakra­w Championsh­ips 2013, organised by the Amateur Sepaktakra­w Associatio­n of Sri Lanka, at the St. Joseph’s Indoor Sports Complex at Darley Road yesterday.

These teams from Pinnawela Central College Rambukkana and Debarawewa displayed superior skill, positionin­g and fitness far beyond expectatio­ns. They are sure to give the experience­d teams such as Uva Malays, Malay CC and other experience­d teams a good run for their money when the competitio­n resumes at the same venue at 7.30 am today. The finals scheduled to be worked off in the Regu and Doubles events at 5 pm at the same venue.

This is the first occasion that the girls’ teams participat­ed in this championsh­ip.

The Pinnawela CC Rambukkana team led by SMD Senanayake said that they took up the sport at a workshop organised by the Sepaktakra­w Associatio­n headed by double internatio­nal Nizam Hajireen, which is a forerunner for the Kings Cup Tournament to be held in Thailand shortly. After the championsh­ip a pool will be picked to undergo further training for the Thai Kings Cup contest.

The Pinnawela CC team comprised of SMD Senanayake (Capt), HPKA Palpitiya, UHASandama­lie, MDSL Samarasing­he, HMTN Her- ath, GH Rushmila JKRIM Jayasekera.

The Debarawewa girls team who were not far behind the efforts pf the Pinnawela girls consisted of WP Ishani Chathurika (Team A Capt), KH Nethmi Megawarna, LG Pavithra Sandeepani (Team B Capt), WPER Dulakshi, WP Sugandi Malsha and M. Sachini Sitara.
