Debarawewa and Pinnawela girls steal the show at Sepaktakraw

Five women’s teams featured on the opening day of the Sepaktakraw Championships 2013, organised by the Amateur Sepaktakraw Association of Sri Lanka, at the St. Joseph’s Indoor Sports Complex at Darley Road yesterday.

These teams from Pinnawela Central College Rambukkana and Debarawewa displayed superior skill, positioning and fitness far beyond expectations. They are sure to give the experienced teams such as Uva Malays, Malay CC and other experienced teams a good run for their money when the competition resumes at the same venue at 7.30 am today. The finals scheduled to be worked off in the Regu and Doubles events at 5 pm at the same venue.

This is the first occasion that the girls’ teams participated in this championship.

The Pinnawela CC Rambukkana team led by SMD Senanayake said that they took up the sport at a workshop organised by the Sepaktakraw Association headed by double international Nizam Hajireen, which is a forerunner for the Kings Cup Tournament to be held in Thailand shortly. After the championship a pool will be picked to undergo further training for the Thai Kings Cup contest.

The Pinnawela CC team comprised of SMD Senanayake (Capt), HPKA Palpitiya, UHASandamalie, MDSL Samarasinghe, HMTN Her- ath, GH Rushmila JKRIM Jayasekera.

The Debarawewa girls team who were not far behind the efforts pf the Pinnawela girls consisted of WP Ishani Chathurika (Team A Capt), KH Nethmi Megawarna, LG Pavithra Sandeepani (Team B Capt), WPER Dulakshi, WP Sugandi Malsha and M. Sachini Sitara.
