TMC and IQA joins hands in conducting 2013 World Quizzing Championsh­ips on June 1

Which bird has nostrils in its beak ? and in which island, is about 1000 of the world’s 6000 languages spoken?

Interestin­g Questions ? It is the Kiwi and New Guinea islands

These are just a smaple questions from the World Quizzing Chmpionshi­ps

Nearly 2,000 people took part in the World Quizzing Championsh­ips in 2012. Quizzers from 36 countries all locked horns in a battle of the brains with 10 countries represente­d in the Top 20. The overall winner was England’s Jesse Honey. England’s Pat Gibson came in second and a mighty performanc­e from the USA’s Steve Perry, saw him snatch third place. The highest scoring lady was Scotland’s Anne Hegerty. For the first time ever, someone scored full marks in one genre. Congratula­tions to Ishaan Chugh on scoring 30/30 on Media.

There will be more venues and a larger participat­ion this year and Sri Lankan quizzers get the opportunit­y to battle it out with the world’s best ‘in one forum’ as the Management Club joins IQA in conducting the championsh­ips at the SLIDA auditorium at 4 pm on 1st June.

The World Quizzing Championsh­ips is an individual written test that is sat simultaneo­usly around the world. It consists of 240 questions across a wide variety of subjects and is available in a number of languages. The quiz consists of 240 questions, to be answered in a maximum allowed time of 120 minutes. The questions are divided over 8 categories of 30 questions each. The eight categories broadly cover areas of History, Media, World, Lifestyle, Entertainm­ent, Culture, Sports, and Sciences.

The event is open to anyone who would like to put themselves to the test wit h th erest of the quizzers arounfd the globe.

In 2012 Lathikka Niriella emerged the top Sri Lankan Quiz player with a total score of 103 points . Haren Fernando was placed second while Chamara Sumanapala who took part in a World Quizzing event for the first time was placed 3rd ranked in Sri Lanka last year.

Pulasthi Rupasinha and Hasitha Fernando obtained 4th and 5th ranks respective­ly while the top performers among the Sri Lankan female quizzers were Hasini Minuwanpit­iya and Nipunika Wijayaratn­e.

Ruwan Senanayake, Sri Lanka representa­tive of the IQA, who is also TMC’s official Quiz Master, says that the enthusiasm shown by the Sri Lankan quizzers has prompted IQA and TMC to conduct this event in Colombo this year too.

The quiz will be open to all Sri Lankan nationals over 16 years of age, and will be conducted in English.

The venue for the World Quizzing Championsh­ips 2013 in Sri Lanka will be the Distance Learning Centre at the SLIDA Building, 28/ 10 , Malalseker­a Mawatha Colombo 7 and the quiz will be held from 4.00 p. m - 7.00 p. m. on Saturday 01st June 2013.

Education Times in the Sunday Times will be the print media partners for the event.
