SIIP- Whiz Kids’ exhibition to showcase their talents

-

The Ministry of Higher Education is to host an exhibition where students could showcase their inventions to a national audience.

The exhibition titled SIIP ( Solutions, Inventions, Innovations and Products) will recognise the inventive and innovative talents of students from State universities, non- State higher education institutes, advanced technological institutes and vocational training and technical institutes.

“We have realised that very few students actually come up with new ideas. Though there are many talented students in our country, they are not afforded due encouragement. Hence, through this exhibition, we hope to motivate them to create new solutions, inventions and innovative products towards the economical development of the country,” Higher Education Ministry Secretary, Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne told Education Times.

The students are directed to apply individually or in groups, for the exhibition, scheduled to be held at the BMICH from November 29 to December 2.

The categories in which the prospective candidates should focus are as follows: Making the disabled independent, environment, food, agriculture, health and nutrition, energy, construction, teaching aids, safety and security, garments and accessories, entertainment, communication, business management and other innovations.

Each of the inventions is to be judged in five vertical sections such as ICT, traditional knowledge, electronic, nanotechnology and import substitution.

“Through this exhibition, we will be able to bring out our traditional concepts and methods, as we have good indigenous solutions in Sri Lanka. We are also hoping to commercialise these inventions and give the students patent rights to their work,” the secretary said.
