Royal emerge victorious at inaugural Inter-school golf championsh­ip

Royal College ‘B’ emerged victorious at the inaugural Inter- School Golf championsh­ip organised by Dons Golf in collaborat­ion with the Royal Colombo Golf Club. Thus the Royalists walked away with the RC G C I n t e r- S c h o o l G o l f Championsh­ip Challenge Trophy awarded by RCGC Club Captain Nimal Piyaratne at a star studded awards ceremony held recently, followed by the action at the RCGC.

Old boys and girls of 24 schools took part in this unpreceden­ted event with Royal College emerging as overall champions while St. Joseph’s College Colombo coming in second and closely followed by Trinity College Kandy at third place. Royal ‘ B’ was represente­d by Arjun Fernando, Suresh Hettiarach­chi, P. Kodikara and R. Amarasingh­e also received the ‘MAS Holdings Trophy’ presented for the winning team donated by the chairman of MAS Holdings, Deshamanya Mahesh Amalean. The winners were also given a fully paid Golf tour to Thailand courtesy of the Organizing committee.

St. Joseph’s College, the runnersup was represente­d by Amal Cabraal, Kamlesh Johnpillai, N. Ranchigoda and Roshan Makalanda. They received the ‘ Hyundai- Orient Finance Trophy’ presented by Rajeewa Bandaranai­ke, the CEO of Orient Finance and Prasan de Silva, the general manager of Hyundai Lanka. The Josephians also received a very latest Taylor Made brand RBZ 2 driver club each courtesy of Dons Golf, the Golf Wing of D. S. Senanayake College who were also the organisers.

Trinity College Kandy who was represente­d by Suren Vaas, N. Wadugodapi­tiya, Rohan Athureliya and Anil de Silva were awarded the ‘ Orange Electric Trophy’. Kushan Kodituwakk­u, the managing director of Orel Corporatio­n presented the trophy for the Trinitians who also were presented with the lat- C l e ve l a n d brand T-Frame putter each by the organising committee.

Around 40 fantastic prizes were given away during the awards ceremony held in conjunctio­n with the RCGC Club night. Among the awards presented were the ‘Unilever Trophy’

t for the Best Men’s Gross score won by Sheron Fernando from St. Peter’s College, who is one of the best in the men’s category. The ladies division was won by Dhanushi Senadhira of Holy Family Convent, who is also a top ranking

ladies golfer at the RCGC. Amal Cabraal, the chairman of Unilevers presented the awards to the winners. Jerry Huxtable, the CEO of ‘Dialog Enterprise’ was also present during the awards ceremony to award the ‘ Dialog Enterprise Trophy’ given away for the Best Nett Score for Men which was won by Upul de Silva from S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia. The Best Nett Score for Women was won by Ruwani Designhe from St. Bridget’s Convent Colombo. Jehan de Saram the club Pro and a top class golfer from St. Thomas’ Prep School won two individual awards. He claimed the ‘ Precious House Trophy’ for the Longest Drive on the 8th hole together with a Cleveland Launcher Driver and the ‘MTV Sports Trophy’ for the Longest Drive on the 15th hole. De Saran was kind enough to donate the winning Driver to the Junior Golf Clinic of the RCGC. The Kingsbury Hotel was one of the proud sponsors of the inaugural RCGC Inter School Golf Championsh­ip.

Dons Golf, a group of golf enthusiast­s who schooled at D.S. Senanayake College Colombo spearheade­d this much needed event at the club and also took to task promoting golf to the wider audience hoping to raise funds and to take golf to the school levels. The organisers urged the maximum field of 235 participan­ts to take on the responsibi­lity of doing more to take golf as a sport to their individual schools. A CSR project with the magnanimou­s support received from Ewis Peripheral­s, led by its chairman Sanjeewa Wickramana­yake in donating a child incubator worth Rs. 650,000 to the neighborin­g Castle Street Maternity Hospital made the event wholesome and complete.
