Bridgetines have a blast

Last weekend, 94 teams took on The Bridgetine Challenge 2013, competing fiercely for lavish prizes that include jewellery, weekend getaways, free gourmet meals, gift packs and ipod shuffles among many, many other things. Organised for the first time last year by the Past Pupils Association of St. Bridget’s, this year’s edition included 5 challenges, one of which dubbed Krazy Kiribath had competitors gulping down a spicy chunk of kiribath and at tents set up near Independence Square. The second half of the competition had drivers chasing down clues as they followed predetermined routes that looped around central Colombo. In a first for any school in Sri Lanka, an SMS system was deployed by Etisalat that allowed for earlier tabulation of the results.

Last year, the funds raised from the Bridgetine Drive went towards school development projects as well as the PPA’s CSR projects. The school’s PPA has over 3000 members, says Dr. Nirmala Pieris, the current President, many of whom played an active role in getting the event up and running.

Among the beneficiaries this year were the Blind School at Ragama and the Perakuwatana Sinhala Vidyalaya in Perakuwatana, Kottantivu. The 150 children who attend the latter were given shoes and school supplies, and Dr. Pieris says the PPA plans to continue to support the school in any way they can.

As night fell, it was time for more fun as the Bridgetines rocked to the beat of Ashanti, Ronny Leitch and other popular acts.
