CIMA Spellmaste­r embarks on its 4th season

Over the past 4 years, Spellmaste­r the all island school spelling competitio­n has instilled belief in children between the ages of 14 and 18 years, given them the confidence, the discipline to prepare to contest and to be graceful in both victory and defeat, most importantl­y help develop their English language skills.

The spelling competitio­n introduced to support the Government’s initiative of English as a life skill and to pro- mote and develop the English language skills of students island-wide in a fun and competitiv­e manner now proudly holds the title as “The Best TV Quiz Show” awarded at the 9th Raigam Tele Awards 2012 and in 2010, Spellmaste­r was awarded Best Education TV Programme of the Year at the Asia Media Awards Ceremony.

The competitio­n is held at a National level in collaborat­ion with the Department of Education and conducted in all 25 districts. Students are allowed to enter through the school or individual­ly with an endorsemen­t of the school principal. Those eligible to participat­e in the competitio­n have to be between the age of 14 and 18 years. It will follow the same format as last year’s competitio­n. The students sit for the dictation test, wherein 50 words will be given to them, and subsequent­ly shortliste­d to 3000 students island-wide proportion­ately, who will then be brought down to 500 at the quarter finals, 100 at the semi finals, to the Top 20 and ultimately the Spellmaste­r will be crowned.
