With the sudden influx in educational institutes in Sri Lanka, there are a number of questions that students, parents and potential investors want answered. It is a given fact that in today’s world one of the most important requirements for climbing the corporate ladder is a recognised qualification from a recognised University.

IIHE started out in 1996 and since then IIHE has been in Sri Lanka offering the University of Wales Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs. IIHE, being in the field for 17 years is one of the pioneering institutions for tertiary education in the country. IIHE provides probably the best Undergraduate program in Business Management in Sri Lanka. This is a 3 year program and is offered as a full time or parttime course. The full time course is offered to students who have just completed their Advanced Level examinations and the part- time course is offered to those who are working. Classes for the part-time programmes are conducted during the week-ends and have the same duration as the full time course. The quality of the programme in all these aspects is excellent and parents whose children attend the Institute and the Alumni members vouch for it. IIHE accepts a wide range of students, from local schools to international schools to join them and pass out with the same top end qualification. IIHE has had students with average grades joining us in the past, but have graduated with first class honours. Studying at IIHE also helps our graduates find good jobs at Corporate’s and Multinational companies even before their graduation. This is the level of recognition ,IIHE has in Sri Lanka.

IIHE has a well structured program that caters to local and global market. Also has the best lecture panel, and they have been appointed by the University of Wales. The minimum qualification required to teach is that the lecturers should have a Masters. The lecturers at IIHE are not only academics but also they possess the required level of industry exposure. This gives the advantage of teaching our students, not only the technical skills but also a range of other skills such as soft skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills and sharing the practical exposure. As a result our students leave this university with lots of technical, theoretical, analytical knowledge and the soft skills. When these students join companies upon graduation their performance is better than that of their peers and seniors.

IIHE works, according to the Quality Assurance Authority (QAA) of Great Britain as well as the University of Wales,(UK) and thereby during the last 17 years, even with the fierce competition in tertiary education in Sri Lanka, IIHE has been able to sustain the satisfactory levels of quality and has never compromised on it.

This is a very modern University with all the latest technology and other such advancements. Also the Campus is situated at a strategic location in Bambalapitiya. Entire Campus is covered with wi-fi system, a complete Library, fully airconditioned classrooms, etc. Students at IIHE have their union and are given the freedom to organise their own events within the university. Students at IIHE also organize various congregational and recreational facilities such as Cricket tournaments, Avurudu and ThaiPongal Festivals, Christmas dinner dances etc. In students’ language, “IIHE is a happening place”. This makes the learning process very interesting and always keeps the students very active.

One of the key subjects, that IIHE offers as a university is, a module called, “Real Life Problem Solving, or RLPS”. In this module the students have the opportunity to visit multinational companies and get involved with solving some of their real problems. One of the objectives of this module is to give the students the required corporate exposure. Also from this, the students are able to take on real life situations and depending on how well they handle these issues, companies sometimes offer them jobs upon graduation. IIHE also grants a lot of exemptions for CIMA, ACCA, Chartered Accountancy, CIM and other qualified students depending on their level of grading in that subject. These students will be placed according to their capabilities to complete the internal degree as Advanced Entry students with exemptions..

There are lots of institutes in the country and the competition is stiff and fierce. When institutes here are not directly affiliated with their parent universities, the quality and the recognition of the degree is somewhat questionable. In this aspect parents and the students have to consider these factors strongly before joining an institute. Also, even though there are plenty of institutes the end result should be that the student should receive the required level of knowledge according to the programme, and the due recognition.

Maintaining the required standards and the quality of an university is a challenge, especially since IIHE is competing in an environment where there are no regulations for private institutions in Sri Lanka. In most universities, lecturers are sometimes not qualified enough to teach and the reasons as to why people enrol in these institutes are either because they are carried away by its outward approach or ignorance. Hiring the best lecture in the country might be hard but it is important in terms of delivering the best to the students. As mentioned previously, here at IIHE, has a criteria to recruit lecturers and such standards should be implemented in other institutes in the country as well. There is also the case, where institutes are involved in un-ethical marketing and other such malpractices. IIHE has been maintaining distinctive competence in the market and stands tall amongst the other institutes in Sri Lanka.
