Ladies waltz over Musaeus in their annual regatta

- By David Stephens

Ladies’ College registered a clean sweep over their traditional rowing rivals, Musaeus College, beating them in every race of their annual regatta, including the coveted Boat Race, with a sublime display along the waters of the Beira Lake yesterday.

The Ladies’ crew snatched victory in the Boat Race with one of the day’s most emphatic performances, waltzing to victory in 4 minutes and 2 seconds, 16 seconds ahead of Musaeus. The win gave them 12 points to finish with a maximum tally of 52. The dominant Boat Team consisted of Dharini Samarasinghe, Tharanya Fernando, Isabella Sansoni, Ashani Welikala and Marihah Idroos.

Despite their flawless conquest, Ladies’ were challenged right to the finish in two races: the ‘A’ Pairs and ‘ B’ Fours races, with Musaeus denied a win in both clashes by only a second.

In the ‘A’ Pairs event, Isabella Sansoni and Thiranya Fernando presented a huge measure of heart, digging in deep to pull through in 4 minutes 20 seconds, despite the best efforts of the Musaeus duo of Vinuri Wickramasekera and Janethri Marapana.

After a day of disappointment, a win in the regatta’s penultimate event, the ‘ B’ Fours, would have perhaps have buoyed their crew for a final hurrah in the Boat Race. They started encouragingly and created a significant margin by the time they reached the middle of the course. But once again, the confidence of the Ladies’ College team, comprising Anoushka Tissera, Tarea Karunaratne, Davina Koch, Cha- nika Goonethilaka and Ashmitha Guneratne, propelled past the finish post in 4 minutes and 5 seconds.

Ladies’ had some commanding triumphs earlier in the piece, romping to comprehensive wins in the ‘A’ Sculls ( Yellani Rasthaputhra), ‘ B’ Sculls ( Ishara Abbey), ‘ B Pairs ( Dharini Samarasinghe, Ashani Welikala), ‘ B’ Double Sculls ( Ishara Abbey, Anika Ahamed) and ‘ C’ Fours ( Yellani Rasthputhra, Nashali Goonethilaka, Ishara Abbey, Anika Ahamed, Tehani Walpola) races.
