Aidex Sports Festival today

The annual Aidex Sports Festival conducted for amputees who use Jaipur Limbs and donors will be held at the Wesley College ground in Campbell Place today.

The annual event which will be open for public is organised for the 23rd year by the Colombo Friend- in- Need Society, who will celebrate their 182nd anniversar­y this year.

According to the organisers the Aidex Sports Festival is a much looked forward event by both the participan­ts and organisers. Confirming its growing enthusiasm over 400 participan­ts has sent their entries from all parts of Sri Lanka, for this year’s event.

“Among the participan­ts are members of the Armed Forces and civilians who have undergone amputation of limbs following various circumstan­ces in addition to rare cases of children who are born with limb defects,” a member of the organising committee said.

The Sports Day will begin at 9.00am with the cycle races for men and women. The proceeding­s will follow with 57 track and field events inclusive of 100m, 200m, 400m, Putt Shot, Long Jump, Discus Throw and Archery.

“As in previous years our supporters and well- wishers will give us encouragem­ent through sponsorshi­ps and various other means. This year too Dilmah will provide us with T-Shirts and Caps for participan­ts and volunteers while Perera and Sons will provide a free breakfast for all. In addition we have received cash donations and contributi­ons in other forms to make this event a success,” the committee member added.

The staff of Colombo Friend-in-Need Society, Girls Guides of Musaeus College, Medical students of the Colombo Medical Faculty and the staff of Tallman Tours have volunteere­d to assist in event organising for the day.
