The main communication

-

World Post Day is on October 9. The Postal Department had organized several programmes to mark this day. There was a stamp exhibition which was held at the Postal Headquarters. The ministry had organized a special bicycle tour with 250 postmen. On that day a new set of stamps depicting flowers of Sri Lanka was also released.

In the ancient days, letters were carried by messengers and documents were carried by foot or on horseback. In 1840, Sir Rowland Hill proposed a postage stamp. This turned the whole postal system upside-down.

The postal system is not only for the delivery of letters. Documents, parcels, magazines, newspapers and a variety of other things are sent by mail. Telephone, fax, money transfer, banking and bill payment facilities are also available at the Post Office.

From the main post office, the letters or parcels are separated to different areas. There are many postmen to deliver these letters to each area. This is how we get our mail. It is in this way that I get the letters from the Funday Times.

Today communication takes place mainly through telephones but the postal system provides a more memorable communication. We should appreciate the service that they provide us. Janani Gajadheera (14 years) Willesden College Int.,
