40 TH ROYAL -THOMIAN REGATTA Thoras fly high at Beira Lake

S. Thomas’ made a clean sweep of the 40th Royal-Thomian Regatta at the Beira Lake yesterday winning by 40 points to 12 and with it the T. Noel Fernando Trophy.

The event that commenced in 1962 was then known as the Royal – Thomian Boat Race. It evolved into a regatta format in 1966 and currently comprises 11 races. Out of the 39 Regattas rowed, S. Thomas’ College has recorded 18 wins while Royal College won 15. Five Regattas ended in a draw, while the Regatta in 2006 was not held. The races were rowed over a distance of 1000 yards at the Colombo Rowing Club. Regarded as the most prestigiou­s boat race in Sri Lanka, the race is rowed for the Boat Race Trophy – Senior Fours.

The Chief Guest was Ramli Ghaffoor, Past Captain of Royal College in 1986 and Director/Chief Executive Officer of Uga Escapes (a member of Finco Holdings Pvt. Ltd). The Guest of Honour was Suren Goonewarde­na, Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, Bharathi Airtel Lanka.

A Scull: (Uvin Siriwarden­a (RC) lost to Sandeesh Bartlett (STC) Time: 3:30 to 3:23 (STC 6 pts).

B Scull: Lahiru Herath (RC) lost to lost to Vishan Gunatillek­e Time: 3:36 to 3:28 (STC 2 pts).

B Pair: Keshan Ranasinghe and Dulaj Rajaguru (RC) lost to Ramith Nanayak- kara and Ming-hua Chang. Time: 3:36 to 3:18 (STC 4 pts).

A Pair: Bilal Hassan and Ishan Perera (RC) lost to Anuradha Nadaraja and and Musgahid Munshiff (STC). Time: 3:22 to 3:15.

Double Scull: Uvin Siriwarden­a and Promod Rajaguru (RC) lost to Sandesh Bartlett and Vishan Gunatillek­e (STC). Time: 3:17 to 3:11. STC 8 pts.

C Four: Trevine Able, Kavish Abeygunewa­rdena, Shavindra De Costa, Devaka Kumarasing­he and Azian Sourjah (RC) lost to Kemil Peter, Avishka Perera, Nadun Wickremara­tne, Amrith Peiris and Meshach Peiris (STC). Time: 3:17 to 3:20. No points.

B2X: Bilal Hassan, DulajRajag­uru (RC) beat Ramith Nanayakkar­a and Ming-hua Chang (STC). Time: 3:14 to 3:18. RC 4 pts.

U 16 Four: Hashen Hettigoda, Pratap Perera, Praveen Hapugalle, Kaveen Rajapakse and Avishka Jayaweera (RC) beat Arjun Wikremanay­ake, Charith Dissanayak­e, Akarsha Weerasoori­ya. Kemith Nanayakkar­a and Vishmitha Peiris (STC). Time 3:21 to 3:33. No Points.

Old Boys Four: Mevan Peiris, Hussein Sulaiman, Amrit Rajapakse, Ruwan Abeyratne and Lishan Wickremana­yake RC) lost to Maheel Gamage, Shanilka de Silva, Dineshka Aluwihare, Gayajith Dassanayak­e and Sharen Kannangara (STC). Time: 3:56 to 3:36. No points.

B Four: Shavindra De Costa, Lahiru Herath, Amrith Fernando, Ishan Perera, Kaveen Rajapakse (RC) beat Sachin Munasinghe, Minghua Chang, Saliya Gunasekera, Vishan Gunatillek­e and Amrith Peiris (STC). Time: 3:12 to 3:19. RC 8 Points.

A Four: Pramod Rajaguru, Uvin Siriwarden­a, Keshan Ranasinghe,Dulaj Rajaguru, Kaveen Rajapakse (RC) lost to Ramith Nanayakkar­a, Sandesh Bartlett, Anuradha Nadaraja, Mushahid Munshiff and Kemil Peter (STC). Time: 3:16 to 3:04. STC 12 Points.

Oarsman of the Regatta: Sandesh Bartlett with a contributi­on of 26 points of S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia.

Overall Trophy: T.N. Fernando of S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia.

Total: Royal 12. S. Thomas’ 40.
