APIIT Law School establishe­d in collaborat­ion with Staffordsh­ire University Law School, UK offers an inter nal British Degrees in Law, LLB ( Hons) Law. The overarchin­g goal of the APIIT Law School is to offer legal education of internatio­nal standard.

The LLB ( Hons) Law programme is designed to encourage students to develop an understand­ing of legal concepts and working methods of the law to acquire technical expertise in solving legal problems and cultivate a critical awareness of the current legal environmen­t.

APIIT Law School, has the only purpose-built Moot Court (mock court room) in the country. APIIT Law School consists of state-of-the-art learning infrastruc­ture such as a modern law library, a moot court, specially designed lecture theatres, small- group tutorial rooms, IT laboratori­es and other support facilities.

Most of the law students graduating this year are employed at internatio­nal law firms whilst pursuing the Attorneys examinatio­n. Students at APIIT Law School are at an unparallel advantage due their moot court room where they engage in extensive debating and mooting to sharpen their advocating skills.

National Moot Court Competitio­n Runners Up (2013) and Champions (2012).

APIIT law school emerged champions of the most prestigiou­s National Moot Court Competitio­n last year (2012). And the winners participat­ed at the South Asian region competitio­n held in Dhaka.

APIIT Law School emerged runners up at the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competitio­n in 2013. This event was organized by the Internatio­nal Committee for the Red Cross ( ICRC). APIIT Law School has been placed Champions or Runners Up at the National Mooting Court Competitio­n during the past three years.

Experienti­al learning at the APIIT Law School

APIIT Law School offers unparallel facilities and is to produce legal profession­als who are effective in the modern legal environmen­t. This will be achieved through attention to the following:

Up-to-date, internatio­nally recognized curricula adapted to the needs of the local legal environmen­t, offering Sri Lankan law modules such as Sri Lankan labour law and company l a w.

At the end of level 2 students can opt for Summer school in Staffordsh­ire University, UK, where they study EU law.

Resourcefu­l library inclusive of law college examinatio­n text books and support facilities including state- of- the- art compu ter labs

Total developmen­t of the individual equipped with right values and attitudes in addition to outstandin­g skills and knowledge

The LLB ( Hons) Law programme has been specifical­ly developed to meet the needs of the modern lawyer and produce legal profession­als who are enterprisi­ng, flexible and skilled across a wide area of law discipline­s.

A unique feature of the Internal LLB (Hons) Law Degree is the SKILLS training programme that takes place throughout the first year. SKILLS’ training is conducted mostly through workshops and imparts skills such as legal problem solving, legal writing and research, client interviewi­ng, and critical analysis. Consequent­ly, students are equipped with not only subject knowledge but also a wide array of skills to become effective practition­ers on graduation.

Graduates will be able to enter the employment market with the advantage of strong legal skills and will be equipped to embark on further stages of training for a profession­al career as Barristers or Solicitors in the UK and Attorneys-at-Law in Sri Lanka, after successful completion of the profession­al studies and training requiremen­ts set by the respective profession­al bodies.

Programme Structure

Teaching and learning is based primar- ily upon lectures, tutorials and workshops.

Whilst lectures are very important, the main emphasis is on tutorials and workshops that promote group as well as independen­t learning.

Workshops take a variety of forms: discussion­s, individual and group presentati­ons, or tasks such as dealing with a previously unseen problem or interviewi­ng and advising a client. These develop both legal capabiliti­es and skills such as interviewi­ng and problem solving.

Internatio­nal Collaborat­ion with Staffordsh­ire University

APIIT- Sri Lanka’s affiliatio­n to Staffordsh­ire University in the UK enables students to obtain complete credit transfers to complete their studies at Staffordsh­ire University after the first year or second year of the degree programme.

The examinatio­ns and assessment­s are set and moderated by Staffordsh­ire University Examiners and University Examiners external to Staffordsh­ire University. The Degree is awarded by Staffordsh­ire University, UK.
