Lamindu scoops up Gold Division prize

Lamindu Rainika clinched the Gold Division title as Ishara Fernando and Mahisha Hirushan snatched the Silver and Bronze championsh­ips, at the Prima Regional Junior Open Golf Championsh­ip, held at the Eagles Golf Links in Trincomale­e.

Lamindu scored 185 to claim the Gold Division, which was open to youngsters between the ages of 15 and 17, with Shemani Jagoda (189), S. Niroshan (190) and Ishan Dilranga (194) finishing behind him.

Ishira won the Silver Division, a category for competitor­s between the ages of 11 and 14, with a tally of 161 points. The 13-year-old scored 82 and 79 over two days to finish comfortabl­y on top ahead of S. Kailash (179), Sathsara Dilshan (183) and Vinod Weerasingh­e (188).

Mahisha impressed with a score of 87 to win the Bronze Division, which was on for young competitor­s below the age category of 10. Promising Kayla Perera scored 96 to finish second and Tienn Kapilasena with 98 finished third.

Thirty juniors competed for top honours over two days of play at the newly-constructe­d Eagles’ Golf Links at China Bay. The championsh­ip was conducted by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) with Ceylon Agro Industries providing sponsorshi­p.

This year for the first time the SLGU introduced the Regional Junior Open Golf Championsh­ip at the Victoria Golf and Country Club in Digana, Kandy. After a successful round, the second edition of the competitio­n was held at Eagles Golf Links in China Bay, Trincomale­e.

This series of competitio­n, according to SLGU, is an initiative to foster and identify talent regionally for national representa­tion. The tournament will also harness rich potential for the junior developmen­t squad of the SLGU. -
