“We thought our opponents as the best teams”- Musaeus

-

“We had not heard about Loyola College before we came to the competition. From nowhere they had come to the final. But we started to think that our opponent as the best team,” Pramodi Premasiri, the leader of Musaeus Debate team said.

“Loyola College was like 1996 Sri Lanka team. They had revolutionised and they were an innovative team,” Sanjeewa Alwis, the debating coach who guided D. S. Senanayake College to win the cup at a previous competition said.

“Started in 2003 from the beginning we have been in the forefront of school debating by beating most reputed schools in Sri Lanka. It was very common for our team to bag the best team, best girls team and in many instances the best Orator, on all most all the contests we participated. In this journey of school debate the pinnacle was joining our school to the “The Debater” programme,” said Pramodi the captain.

On its way to victory, Musaeus defeated Christudeva Balika College Galle, Ashoka College Colombo, Theraputtabhaya National School and Ranabima College, Kandy, Vidyartha College, Kandy , Holy Cross College, Gampaha and finally Loyola College, Negombo to debate on the topic “the Parliament debates shall not be telecast live over the television”.

“In this journey towards the finals there are a lot who helped, guided and supported us. Among them the Principal Ms. S. Dandeniya, Deputy Principals, Ms. Gunarathne and Ms. Chitra Jayathilaka gave us best support and guidance,” Pramodi who had sat A/L in bio science and awaiting her results said.

The master in charge of debate Sanjeewa Alwis, an IT Engineer who had taken up coaching for the sheer love of it had been a guiding light to Musaeus team.

The rest of the team comprised of Chintani Kumaradasa who has sat for the GCE(A/L) in the Maths awaiting results, Shamisha Samarasinghe who serves as present president of the Debating and Oratory Society in the school and Manujee Chamathka who is sitting for the GCE (O/L) exam in this year.
