Lumbini Royal: Ready to face the changing world

Lumbini Royal College is a provincial mixed school which belongs to the Gangawata Educationa­l Zone in Kandy. It is striding with the vision to “become a unique and a productive school respecting the aims and objectives of the National Education Policy within next five years”

In 1943, this school was inaugurate­d as Bowala Vidyalaya with only one building. At first, only the surroundin­g villagers admitted students to this school. When they reached the 70’s, the school had taken massive strides for its developmen­t. Dedicated members of the staff strived hard to reach this target.

Today the college is known as Lumbini Royal College, and it is able to compete with other leading schools in both their educationa­l as well as extra-curricular activities. Since the 70’s, the College administra­tors have endeavoure­d to provide their students the best of facilities. Today Lumbini Royal as a 1C school has spacious class-rooms, well equipped laboratori­es and sports facilities and conduct classes from Grade One to Thirteen.

Mr. W.M. Gunathilak­e (2005-to the present), serves as the principal. He dedicated himself to the developmen­t and the achievemen­ts of the college during his eight years of service in this journey as the leader. His l eadership has brought many successes to mother Lumbini Royal.

Students sharpen their potentials by participat­ing in both academic and various extracurri­cular activities without limits. The past few years has seen a continuous and sustained growth of performanc­e of the students in academic as well as extra- curricular arenas. Annual achievemen­ts and successes of Lumbini Royal have always been among the top in the Zone. The achievemen­t in the Grade 5 scholar- ship has increased since 2005. Excellent achievemen­ts at GCE (O/L) examinatio­n every year have placed Lumbini Royal in a good position and it has increased since 2008 from 42%. Today they enjoy 70% success. Annually a reasonable amount of students enter state universiti­es through the highly competit ive GCE ( A/ L) examinatio­n. Extra and co-curricular activities play a major role in Lumbini Royal. They were able to secure the first or second places at the All Island dancing competitio­ns in the “Below 1000 Students” category since 2009. Both girls and boy have participat­ed in the above competitio­ns and the Solo and Group category groups as well securing first and second places in Sabaragamu­wa and Kandyan dancing contests.

Lumbini Royalists have also shown their colours in sports and language day competitio­ns. They have been taking part with the leading schools in the island at All Island Athletic meets.

Co- Curricular activities also have brought fame to mother Lumbini Royal. Six students have been selected for all island new inventors’ competitio­n. In order to improve the oratory skills and general knowledge of students, they have formed several societies and clubs. Annually plenty of happenings such as Bakthi Geetha, Commerce Day, Language Day, society meetings and primary school activities have been organised to bring out their hidden talents.

Being a 1C school, Lumbini Royal has made huge efforts to provide a friendly environmen­t for the mental developmen­t of the students. The well maintained school environmen­t brought them second place in the Best Environmen­t Friendly School Competitio­n -2012. They were also able to win the British Council Internatio­nal School Award 2012-2015.

The principal as the leader of the school has displayed his leadership and administra­te skills to guide the school in their victory path. It is important to mention about the great dedication that the staff of Lumbini Royal College, has shown in its history to uphold its excellent education among every batch of students.

With the mission of “groom and bestow a generation of highly talented and competent students in order to uphold good values and attitudes, able to look up to others with great respect and dignity, make claims to a solid knowledge base and skills, with a great inclinatio­n towards self-confidence and have disseminat­ing and pleasant thoughts in the healthy environmen­t in the city of Senkadagal­a.” Lumbini Royal is ready to face the changes of this fast- changing world.
