- Ashan De Zoysa Head of IT at Central Finance

A young individual with diverse talents, Ashan De Zoysa saw Informatio­n Technology as the stepping stone to a wide world of opportunit­y. Not only did he perceive the IT Industry to be a challengin­g one but also one that was fundamenta­l to many industries and therefore offered a wide choice in terms of career opportunit­ies.

Having ascertaine­d his study area for his chosen career path, when searching for a degree that would match up to his expectatio­ns Ashan was greatly influenced by what the Informatic­s Institute of Technology (IIT)had to offer. One of the many facets that impressed him was the consistenc­y of student placements following the degree. This propelled him apply for the scholarshi­p scheme at IIT for which he was eventually chosen.

Having commenced his degree in BSc Informatio­n Systems Ashan realized that the Institute truly lived up to its reputation. Seeing a fundamenta­l difference between IIT and other similar institutes he found that they offered him a well thought out programme structure and curriculum that included not only an extensive understand­ing of the theoretica­l subject matter but also the wide practical applicatio­n of each subject. “The curriculum was intensive and met up to all the requiremen­ts of the industry standards of that time. Their exams placed great importance on the practical applicatio­n of the subjects and were therefore geared for actual work based situations. The lecturers who were experience­d personnel from the industry were very committed in the sense that they not only gave plenty of individual attention but also trained us to handle group assignment­s and work successful­ly in teams.

Ashan’s final year project that consisted of project on designing the latest communicat­ion technology to improve communica- tion infrastruc­tures in Sri Lanka also gave Ashan a good experience and insight into designing software systems that were practicall­y applicable. This he says provided him a good grounding for specializi­ng in the area of work which he carries out today.

Having commenced his career at Informatic­s ( Pvt) Ltd where he started working as a junior executive he latterly gained the position o f Manager Systems Integratio­n. Thereafter he was offered the position of Assistant General Manager IT at Peoples Bank , where he was a key decision maker in the Executive management team and implementi­ng their entire core banking and communicat­ion infrastruc­ture , which is being used up to date by the bank. Today Ashan works as Head of Informatio­n Technology at Central Finance and holds a position, both as top-level manager ger and as the person setting straterate­gic goals for all business ss technology. He is s responsibl­e for the company’s technology direction and for the transforma­tion of capital, be it monetary, or intellectu­al into technology in furtheranc­e of the company’s objectives.

Outlining his duties es Ashan stated that he needs eeds to ensure that the IT systems ystems meet the needs of the organizati­on rganizatio­n and that he is responsibl­e for the key IT initiative­s of the company. Therefore he focuses on strategic issues and the overall effectiven­ess of the IT in the organizati­on and oversees the IT budget and maintains responsibi­lity for performanc­e management, IT acquisitio­n , profession­al developmen­t, and training. In addition, he is responsibl­e for the company’s IT architectu­re and strategic and capital planning. Looking b back at his career path and dis distinct career growth Ashan says “I don’t think I coul could have achieved all I hav have if not for the groundin ing and training I re received at IIT. Because no not only did I receive an ac academic education here Ia I also received practical tra training and Skill developm opment that equipped me to fa face the working world with c confidence. These are the reas reasons that I have today encouraged my daughter to also choose IIT as h her institute of choice . She graduated in Informatio­n Systems with Business Management in 2013 and I am confident that she too will be able to gain immensely from the degree she obtained from IIT , the same way that I have . I encourage her all the way as knowing that her career path is mapped out in the very best manner during her time at IIT “
