ANC reign at APIIT sports extravaganza
The American National College emerged overall champion in swimming and basketball while sharing top honours for football with Royal Institute, at the 2013 APIIT Sports Extravaganza, an inter-university sports encounter organized by the Student Activity Club of APIIT.
The events sees students from private higher education institutes and state universities compete against each other in badminton, basketball, cricket, football, rugby and swimming over two days at two different venues.
Among the top swimming performances, Reshika Udugampola was the highlight of all, placing first in the 25m Butterfly, 50m Butterfly and in 100m Individual Medley. Tashia Dias was also placed first in the 25m Breaststroke, 50m Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle with outstanding performances.
Another high achiever was Namali Kahawatte who finished second in the 25m Backstroke, 50m Backstroke. Among male performances, Shehan Dias was placed second in the 25m Backstroke and 50m Backstroke while Gyles Darmarathne was placed third in the 50m Butterfly.
The outstanding ANC swimming team comprised of Reshika Udugampola, Tashia Dias, Namali Kahawatte, Shehan Dias, Gyles Darmarathne, Aneeka Ratwatte, Dilrini Dolapihilla, Chathura Wickramage, Viraj De Silva, Asel Kularathne, Hareen Perera, Eranda Kalupathirana, Nipuni Liyanapatabendi
Securing the basketball overall championship in the men’s division, the college teamed battled against RI, APIIT, ACBT, NSBM, NIBM, Mercury playing six matches in total and winning five. The basketball team comprised of Amlak Jiffry, Jared Fernando, Navodh Wakkumbure, Umair Riyas, Migara Amarasinghe, Shehan Udugampola and Sajid Sheriff
In football, where ANC faced RI in the finals, the match was called off due to bad weather conditions by officials, hence declaring a joined championship. The team comprised of Louis Jeyaveerasingan, Harshan Joseph, Aaron Segaram, Abbas Abdul Malik, Tharusha Gunathilake, Farhan Mohamed, Umair Riyas, Zion Wensly, Ruchinda Gooneratne and Ahmed Yaseen.
ANC were also the participants of cricket and girls’ basketball, finishing third overall in the latter and reaching the quarterfinals in the former.
