Rotaract Club at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura – Excellent role models
Strikes, ragging and indiscipline are common headlines associated with local universities. However, it’s amazing how resourceful students can be when given half- a- chance. The Rotaract Club at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura organised and presented “Nethu Dahasak” a musical concert in aid of the visually impaired students at the University. Every one of the 1400 chairs at the University was sold out thanks to the entrepreneurial skills of Saroj Somarathne and his fellow Rotaractors at the University Of Sri Jayewardenepura. They want to be part of a global community of young adults taking action for positive change. Rotaract enables them to not only achieve this but will also help them to standout from the crowd of grad- uates when seeking employment.
Sachini Nipunsala a first year student at the university was an outstanding compère. She lit the stage bright with her poses and immaculate control of emotion to suit each occasion. The Rotaractors’ meticulous planning paid off. The Vice Chancellor Dr. N. L. A Karunarathne at the university was extremely positive about the value Rotaract adds to his students. He was not aware of Rotaract until recently. He was thrilled that his students were focused on activities which relate to the care of fellow students. The musician Rohana Weerasinghe stated “it was not only a music show... objectives were to provide equal opportunities for people with special needs… featuring talented singers who have made their mark in the music scene despite their physical limitations is the best way to get the message across”.
Listening to all the visually impaired artistes, especially the seven year old blind in both eyes - Iroshan Madhushanka – Child Star who rose to popularity through “Derana Little Star”, i s an i nspirat i o n f or all of us. Janashakthi Insurance and Rotarians at the Battaramulla Club should be proud to have sponsored the event.
