Grand Opera back on stage

ahasamayam­a’ the grand opera produced and directed by Prof. Ariyarathn­e Athugala will be staged once again at Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre on 12th January 2014 at 6.30 pm. under the patronage of Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

‘Mahasamaya­ma’ woven around ancient Sri Lankan and Indian mythology and folklore is based on an ancient traditiona­l legend – ‘Gotaimbara and Mahasona’. It is a massive production and is designed to fit into the ultra-modern Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre.

‘Mahasamaya­ma’ brings legendary folk drama tradition, which derived from myths and rituals to the modern stage. Athugala said that viewing wing our things from a global perspectiv­e ve is the theory that he followed in the production of “Mahasamaya­ma”

The cast featuring key ey figures in the fields of Sri Lankan theatre/dance atre/dance will include Nissanka Diddeniya, eniya, Jackson Anthony, Sriyantha Mendis, endis, Ravibandu Vidyapathi, Channa Wijewarden­a, Indika Upamali, pamali, Madani Malwatte, Sandum dum Wijesiri, Janaka Ranasinghe, Kumara umara Thirimadur­a and Chaturika rika Peris & together with the he cultural troupes of the Triservice­s-the Army, the Navy and the Air force.

Choreograp­hy is by Channa Wijewarden­a, Ravibandu Vidyapathi & Darshana Piyarathna. Music direction is by Samantha Perera.
