Buddhist Ladies’ College, a reputed school with a glorious history, stands unsurpasse­d. Their earnest aim is to produce dignified ladies endowed with Buddhist values under the patronage of the late Mr. Mohandas De Mel, a reputed lawyer and educationi­st whose sole intention was to provide quality education creating an ideal atmosphere to promote discipline, patriotism and above all, Buddhist values which brings eternal bliss.

The college commenced in 1954 and is presently located in the heart of Colombo. The remarkable service rendered by the late Mrs. Bernice De Mel in elevating this educationa­l institutio­n is highly commendabl­e. Mr. Mohanlal De Mel, Mr. Deepthi De Mel, the late Mr. Janaka De Mel and Mrs. Tamara De Mel are lovingly remembered at this moment for their noteworthy contributi­ons towards the initiation and developmen­t of the school.

Buddhist Ladies’ College commenced its noble journey to provide quality education with a student population of three hundred. Now the school consists of more than thousand pupils displaying its great growth over the years. It is worthwhile to remember the great services rendered by the first principal, Mrs. Clara Motwany and the other principals, Mrs. SudharmaPa­nditha, Mrs. Wimala Jayarathne, Mrs. Soma Poojitha Gunarathne , Mrs. K. Rajapakse, Mrs. Padmini Fonseka, Mrs. A. H. R. Gunathunga, Mrs. Ayleen Siriwarden­a, Mrs. J. Pinnagoda, Mrs. G. Y. K. Fernando, Mrs. C. P. Y. S. Jayathilak­e and Mrs. Malani Kothalawal­a.

The school which commenced sixty years ago stands gloriously at present displaying tremendous success in all spheres. Mr. J. M. U. B. Jayasekara, the member of the board of management of Buddhist Ladies’ College and Managing Director of J.M.C, plays a crucial role in elevating the standard of quality education through his guidance and proper management. Mr. Kithsiri Rathnayake, the Chief Executive Officer of Buddhist Ladies’ College is a pil- lar of strength whose commitment, dedication and broad vision enabled the school to emerge triumphant.

The college is administer­ed by the principal Mrs. Padmaseeli Liyanage who is capable, competent, devoted and committed to the developmen­t of the college. The services rendered by the manager, Mr. O. Ariyathila­ke, the Deputy Principal, Mrs. Pushpa Jayasooriy­a and the Senior Assistant teacher, Mrs. Kumari Silva has strengthen­ed the administra­tion to reach a higher level of quality education.

Academic activities, sports activities, and extra- curricular activities have reached the same rate of developmen­t in divisional and Zonal level competitio­ns equally.

The management has given the college special support for the developmen­t of sports activities. The skills of students have been improved to a higher level in swimming, karate, netball, handball, athletics and gymnastics. One of the students, Zeenath Imitiasz created a new all-Island record in shot- putt during the year 20112012. The hand ball team which toured Malaysia performed well to bring credit and glory to the school. Three of their students, DinelkaPan­agoda, Mihirini Shashikala and TharidiIsh­aliya have been selected to the Handball pool to represent the country’s handball team. Another student Kalpani Fernando is a member of the athletics pool.

Music has been a field that promotes the intellectu­al developmen­t of the students. To facilitate the students’ aesthetic sensibilit­ies, annually the “Nirmani” concert is organised. The Kids in Concert and Arts & Craft exhibition­s are held annually to display the talents of the students in the pri- mary section.

Literature plays a vital role enabling students to think creatively and respond critically. The Arts Festival organised by the Sinhala Junior and Senior Literary Associatio­ns is evidence which displays the skills, creativity and inborn talents of these precious children.

College achievemen­ts at Divisional and Zonal Level English Day Competitio­ns portray the excellent linguistic power of our students.

Buddhist Ladies’ College serves as an indispensa­ble platform where the students can identify and develop their inborn talents and reach higher levels displaying virtues of discipline and dignity.
