IIT software engineering degree paves the way for highly paid jobs

-

With Technology literally ruling the 21st Century the need for systematic Software System Development and maintenance together with a method to ensure its reliability and efficiency is paramount.

The BEng ( Hons) Software Engineering offered at the Informatics Institute of Technology ( IIT- www. iit. ac. lk) is an internal degree that is offered by the University of Westminster in the UK. It therefore has a global recognition. The very fact that IIT is the Institute to provide this degree is an added advantage for those looking at career growth options both in Sri Lanka and in an International arena. This is because at IIT the degree is not just taught but students are fully immersed in the practical aspects of the subject and industry through their lecturers – who are big names in the Software Engineering field as well as the placement year experience that is mandatory for the IIT students which is supported by the multinational and the Sri Lankan blue chip companies.

Apart from the practical expertise advantage, students at IIT also benefit from a course structure that has been designed by industry experts keeping in mind not just the theory but the practice as well. The degree structure begins with a systematic well spread study of Communications and Career Management for Computer Scientists & Software Engineers, Computer Systems Fundamentals, Web Technology, Software Development Principles, Mathematics for Computing and Information Systems. These subjects form the basis of the degree programme and cover a wide spectrum of the relevant areas of study.

With this foundation, students are then well equipped for Professional P r a c t i c e, O b j e c t - O r i e n t e d Programming, Algorithms and Complexity Software Development Group Project.

The knowledge gleaned from these subjects are sufficient for the students to go into their third year placement where they are able to see their subjects come alive in practical application. The experience they receive serves them well in the fourth year especially when completing their final year project. They also learn Security and Forensics, Formal Specification in the final year. Apart from these subjects, students are able to choose optional subjects during their second and final year so that they are able to better hone their knowledge in areas where they show better aptitude.

Apart from academic knowledge, IIT also places great importance in Soft Skill Development, Team work, Motivational projects, Presentation skills and other professional attitudes and interpersonal skills. Also IIT encourage students to participate in national and international competitions such as Microsoft Imagine Cup, and National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) etc and IIT has won many accolades at these competitions. Continuing the winning streak at national and international competitions, this year too, Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) was victorious once again at the 2014 Microsoft Imagine Cup competition. Five teams from IIT participated in the ‘World Citizenship’, ‘Innovation’ and ‘Games’ categories and all five teams went on to win awards, bringing credit to IIT.

With a dedicated team of lecturers and administrators, and accolades IIT remains the number one choice amongst students for Information Technology Degrees. IIT invites students after A/L’s or O/L’s to come and witness the difference that the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) can make for them with its expertise and experience since 1990.
