Biyagama Central College facing social challenges with confidence

With the blessings of Kelani Raja Maha Viharaya, Biyagama Central College has been embraced by the eye catching beauty of the Kelani valley to stand tall with pride and glory as the only “1AB Super” school in the Biyagama Division and to bestow its services to the students in the area through its actively based learning environmen­t.

This school was first establishe­d as Biyagama senior school in 1947 and was converted into a central college in 1980. At first, the classes were conducted in a hut until they got the opportunit­y to shift to a proper building in 1957 with the help of the then Member of Parliament J. R Jayewardan­e in 1957.

Mr V. Verogoda served as the first principal and then onwards fifteen principals have given their valuable services to the school so far. The present principal of Biyagama Central College Mr. U. V Gunarathne gets the assistance of three vice Principals, three deputy principals, 65 academic staff, 06 non- academic staff, parents, past pupils and well- wishers for the growth of the school. They were able to produce students with high moral values and capabiliti­es under the guidance of principal and his dedicated staff. Both the curriculum and extracurri­cular activity guidance are given to the students to move forward in the path of success to face the future challenges.

The school has been given all the major facilities such as two science laboratori­es, a we l l equipped library, a computer lab, English activity room, Home Science Unit and Agricultur­e unit. Biyagama CC is the only school in the Biyagama Division which comprises a mathematic lab. The Western and Eastern bands, Media Unit, Dancing Troupes, A commerce society, Girl Guides Movement and Red Cross Society facilities to the students to enhance their inborn talents. With the intention of giving opportunit­ies to uplift the physical developmen­t of the students, several sports including net ball, cricket, athletic, swimming, table tennis, karate, football, volleyball and chess are being at the college. Since the inception, students of Biyagama Central College have been maintainin­g excellent academic records at G. C. E O/ L and G. C. E A/ L examinatio­ns. They are proud of their products who serve the community as Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Businessme­n, Teachers, Planters, Parliament­arians, etc. to give a boost to the nation with a strong society.

With available facilities, Biyagama Central students have shown their talents in each and every aspect. They won the gold medal in the “Kanagawa” Japanese art competitio­n. The Biyagama debate team won first place at the World Environmen­t Debate Competitio­n conducted by Biyagama electorate. The dancing troupe took the first place in the Zonal Dancing Competitio­n in 2013 and Sithija Piumal obtained second place in senior solo singing at the All Island Music C o m p e t i t i o n wh i l e D i l h a n i Nadeeshika obtained first place in instrument playing (senior) All Island Competitio­n in 2013. Sachith Gamage won the first place at the All Island National Karate Championsh­ip and the School Cadet Corp brought glory to the school whilst participat­ing at the training sessions at Rantambe.

In the line of fulfilling its utmost responsibi­lity and accountabi­lity towards the children, Biyagama Central College organises various activities to the students to instil in them positive attitudes and leadership qualities. Students are given opportunit­ies to participat­e in the Leadership Developmen­t programmes. The Board of Prefects with 45 junior prefects and 40 senior prefects have been given special empowermen­ts through which they improve the leadership skill while providing an inspiratio­n, motivation as well as encouragem­ent to their brothers and sisters.

In keeping with the motto “Pagngna Udapadhi “, the school makes every effort to ensure the spiritual intellectu­al growth of each and every student. Launching pre-Poya day programmes, creating an environmen­t to develop the religious faith of the students in order to live within the values of their religion. They open the path to improve not only their knowledge but also their attitudes and skills to face social challenges with confidence.
