GEC opens new opportunities for A/L students to study medicine

-

Global Education Centre (GEC) offers students a reliable and a successful path to pursue their higher education after sitting for advanced level exams in biology. GEC is a leading student consultancy agency in Sri Lanka with a history of six plus years in the industry and contended students who have fulfilled their dreams of studying abroad, especially in medicine and engineering. GEC sows hope in the hearts of many science stream students who are left without much options after A/L exams. The success rate of students pursuing their goal of becoming a doctor through The Centre has jumped roof-height and Mr. Amal Perera, the Director and Consultant of GEC speaks about the paths that are opened through their partnership with the Virgen Milagrosa University in Philippines.

One of the many barriers in studying abroad is the language. Especially for students pursuing medicine as countries like Russia and China which offer medical education mandates the students to learn their language. However, Philippines has the third largest English speaking population in the world after U.S and U.K and they teach in English too. Since medicine involves a lot of practical work in the community, English speaking community makes life a lot easier for students. In addition, since Philippines too is a tropical country like Sri Lanka, the students adapt easily. Moreover, due to similar weather and climate, the patients and sicknesses they encounter there are the same as in Sri Lanka, which gives them a hands on experience before they start practicing here.

Also, economy can be a major stumbling block for students who wish to pursue higher education overseas. But Philippines offers low- cost yet quality education the reason why it proves to be the perfect choice for students studying abroad. $18,000 for all five years of study at VMU. We have been in a partnership with the university since 2008 and the first batch of our students have successfully graduated too. The university is situated 200 km away from Manila, the capitol of Philippines and provides the perfect suburban environment for students. VMU is operating in its 56th year with about 150 Sri Lankan students in the medical college alone.

Furthermore, VMU follows the American education system which prepares the students well in advance for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) which enables them to practice medicine in the United States. Additionally, there is a hospital in the university and also a few affiliated hospitals in the community which gives the students opportunities to practice what they study.

Yes, it is. VMU is the only university in Philippines which offers medical degrees that are recognized in Sri Lanka.

The student should have passed A/L exam in bio stream with at least 2 Credit passes and a Simple pass.

There are hostel facilities on campus. Some students choose to move out of the hostel after about two years of study, but, that is up to the students to decide. The monthly living expenses come to about $150, however, it depends on the student and their spending patterns.

In addition to consultancy in regards to pursuing higher education overseas, GEC also helps the parents of students with their visas, if they choose to visit their child. Also, when the Dean or a Faculty Member of the Medical Faculty of VMU visits Sri Lanka, GEC arranges a meeting for the parents with the university staff to inquire and to better understand the quality education their children receive.
