Walala MMV vault high in Central Province athletics
Walala A. Ratnayake MMV from the Wattegama Educational Zone bagged both the Boys’ and Girls’ Best Athlete titles at the Central Province Inter-education Zone track and field meet, which concluded at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy on July 4.
Walala A. Ratnayake MMV, with an aggregate of 247 points, clinched the boys’ segment for the sixteenth year while Trinity College Kandy were a close second with 237 points and St. Sylvester’s College Kandy came in third with 85 points.
In the girls’ category, Walala A. Ratnayake MMV finished on top with 370 points, while Ambagamuwa MMV Hatton ran into second place with 214 points followed by Mahamaya Girls’ College Kandy who came in third with 62 points.
The five-day athletic meet, conducted by the Central Province Education department under the guidance of Director of Physical Education P. Athula Jayawardane, saw over 3500 athletes representing 15 Educational Zones in the districts of Matale, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya taking part in 153 track and field events worked off in the Under 15, 17, 19 and 21 age groups.
H.M.G. Madushanka Kulaherath of Poojapitiya N.S. (Katugastota Ed. Zone), who won the Boys’ Under 21 Triple Jump event in a new meet record of 14.48 metres, was adjudged Outstanding Male Athlete while Yamani Dulanjah of Ambagamuwa MMV Hatton, who emerged victorious in the 400 metres in the girls’ Under 17 category with a timing of 58.6 seconds, was named Outstanding Female Athlete.
Thirteen (13) new meet records (Seven in track and six in field events) were established and one was equaled at this year’s meet.
