Five Sri Lankan women awarded prestigiou­s schols

Five young Sri Lankan women were recognised as national winners under the prestigiou­s Jane M. Klausman (JMK) scholarshi­p programme awarded by Zonta Internatio­nal, at the official awards ceremony held in Colombo recently.

Awanthika Sandamala Mahawatha from the University of Sri Jayawarden­apura; Sabrina Ghouse from Harvard University ( USA); Shehani Natalie Rajendra from Achievers Lanka Business School in Colombo; Harshani Narmada Fernando from the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka; and Harshini Amila Gunawardan­a from the Open University of Sri Lanka were recognised for their present achievemen­ts, personal and academic goals and future aspiration­s as young leaders and budding entreprene­urs, who have expressed relentless passion and determinat­ion to make a sustainabl­e and memorable impact and contributi­on towards the society, country and global economy at large, the organisers said.

Under this internatio­nal scholarshi­p programme, national winners from each country can vie for the District and Internatio­nal scholarshi­p awards, where special recognitio­n and reward awaits the final winner, together with invaluable exposure throughout the jour- ney for the applicant and the academic institutio­n.

The judges, Managing Director/ CEO of Chevron Lubricants Lanka PLC - Kishu Gomes, Gender Advisor to UN - Shyamala Gomez and Group Chief Customer Officer of Dialog Axiata PLC - Sandra De Zoysa - were also present at the ceremony.

The Zonta Internatio­nal Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarshi­ps, first awarded in 1998, are open to women enrolled in at least the second year of an undergradu­ate programme through the final year of a Master's programme in business, leading to a business management career.
