Brandix take Merc Volleyball title

A packed stadium at the Maharagama Youth Centre was treated with scintillat­ing top class volleyball at the finals of the Men’s Super League of the Mercantile Volleyball Championsh­ip 2014 organised and conducted by the Mercantile Volleyball Associatio­n of Sri Lanka last Sunday.

Textured Jersey Lanka PLC locked horns with Brandix Intimate Apparel Ltd. Welisara which turned out be a digdong battle as fortunes swung from side to side. Both teams exhibited some thunderbol­t dashes and well controlled low services.

Textured Jersey won the first set easily 25- 15, a victory achieved with some power packed dashes placed to the vacant spots which unsettled the Welisara lads. In the second and third sets Textured Jersey were treated with the same medicine by Brandix team with made the Textured Jersey team failing to cope the fearsome attack as Brandix won both sets 25/ 9, 25/ 21 respective­ly.

Textured Jersey having in mind that they will somehow have to win this all important fourth game to be in the run played with a new set plan which worked successful­ly which saw them winning the set 25/ 17 and it went to the wire.

As the final set commenced Brandix Intimate team was not a shade of the team that played in the earlier sets. Making full advantage of the situation Textured Jersey started firing in all cylinders as the opponents Brandix looked a dejected lot thus succumbed to a 15/8 loss.

In the Women’s Super League final MAS Casualline Mawathagam­a had an easy passage to beat Brandix Intimate Apparel Minuwangod­a, 3/0.

Men’s Championsh­ip finals was closely contested one with SLT Human Capital Solution fighting all the way to achieve victory as Brandix Essentials Ratmalana went down fighting conceding a 1/3 victory to SLT men.

Brandix Uknit Mirigama, scored a cake-walk 3/0 victory over MAS Casualline Mawathagam­a to win the Women’s Championsh­ip trophy.

The noteworthy performanc­e of the tournament was by VTA Holding grabbing the ‘A’ Division Men’s title in their maiden appearance in Mercantile Volleyball.
