Samaposha football from Nov 7 to 10

All plans have been set afoot to stage the final round of the Samaposha Under-15 Inter-School Football Championsh­ip 2014 will be staged from November 7 to 10 at Kalutara. Out of over 400 teams, which featured over 8000 school children from all parts of Sri Lanka, only 56 – 32 boys and 24 girls – teams will be eligible to compete at the final stage according to Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL), the organisers of the tournament.

A total of 400 teams – 300 boys and 100 girls – participat­ed in the tournament which kicked off at 30 centres throughout the country from October 25. The FFSL President, Ranjith Rodrigo elaborated that the football custodians of the country are aiming at seeing the participat­ion of at least 1000 schools in the coming year with the gradual improvemen­t the competitio­n has achieved.

“The Under-15 Inter-School Tournament is a friendly, yet competitiv­e event organised to identify budding football stars. This tournament gives us the opportunit­y to support young enthusiast­ic athletes to compete at their highest potential. The youngsters are keen to take up football as we have discovered and it strengthen­s our aim of attracting more teams in years to come,” Rodrigo stated.

Last year while Maris Stella College Negombo emerged champions in the boy’s category, Maliyadeva Girls’ School won the girl’s category. The grand finale, which will feature the top 32 boy’s and 24 girls teams, will be held from November 7 to 10 in Kalutara. The finals will also see awards being presented to the best goalkeeper and most valuable male and female player of the tournament.
