A Bachelor degree in Hospitalit­y and Tourism Management course focuses on hospitalit­y, tourism and management. The students after completing this course will be able work in hospitalit­y related tourism establishm­ents such as tourist hotels, travel agents or in any tourist attraction­s management organizati­ons. In this programme students learn about tourism industry, customer service in hospitalit­y, tour operations, event management, housekeepi­ng, Food Service, Front office management, Food and Beve r a g e Manag ement, Le g a l aspects, purchasing and cost control, tourism planning, attraction management, marketing and current issues in hospitalit­y management.

Management and Science University ( MSU) of Malaysia recently establishe­d a learning center in Colombo for the convenienc­e of Sri Lankan stu- dents after GCE O/ L or A/L to follow a profession­al course on Hospitabil­ity and Tourism Management. All the programmes conducted at the MSU Colombo learning center are continuous­ly monitored by the MSU in Malaysia to maintain high quality standards. MSU is recognised by more than forty universiti­es. The Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia has a rating system to evaluate the standards of universiti­es in Malaysia. Under this scheme MSU was r at e d twice as an “Excellent status University”.

An advanced Diploma holder in Hospitalit­y and Tourism Management is able to join the top up programme. The duration of the programme for bachelor degree varies from minimum one year to maximum of three years. All students need to contact the MSU office in Colombo during office hours for more details. All programmes at MSU are conducted on a modular system where students could select the number of modules based on the time available. This facilitate­s the students to do a course on the relevant field of study while working.

Some of the other programmes conducted at MSU are on Eve n t Management, Culinary Arts, Biomedical Science, Fo r e n s i c Science, Informatio­n Technology, Accounting, Islamic Finance, Business Management and Logistic Management. MSU is concerned with the developmen­t of students in soft – skills, informatio­n technology and entreprene­urship throughout the lectures. At MSU all the lecture rooms have modern facilities for the lecturers to conduct the lecturers. There is a library and Resource Centre. All programmes at the MSI stick to a time plan and students will know the date of completion of the programme well in advance. The students are also allowed to make payments for courses through an installmen­t scheme which is a great benefit offered by the Institute.

MSU offers a dual MBA Programme for candidates who are interested in pursuing a Malaysian / British MBA. The dual MBA allows student to earn an MBA f rom the MSU and Coventry University ( CU) UK. The dual MBA programme is designed to give students an opportunit­y to combine new knowledge and practical experience through the integratio­n of theory, research and practice that can be applied at regional, national and internatio­nal levels.

MSU also partners with the University of Newcastle Australia ( Newcastle) to allow MBA students to study their master programme in Bothe Malaysia and Australia.

The post graduate programmes of the MSU are offered through the Graduate Studies (SGS) and the Graduate School of Management (GSM). The SGS offers programmes ranging from postgradua­te diploma, Master’s to PhD in business, informatio­n sciences and health sciences discipline­s. GSM on the other hand provides the MBA and DBA programmes.

It was a remarkable achievemen­t at the 15th convention of the MSU held in Shah Alam, Malaysia this year, where five Sri Lankan students were awarded Doctorate. This outstandin­g achievemen­t by Sri Lankans proves beyond doubt that MSU is a place for the Sri Lankans to do their degree programmes. In total at MSU there are internatio­nal students from 36 countries. Being internatio­nal is one of MSU’s missions of becoming a global university.
