Ch av a k a c h c h e r i Ladies College which is famous for its educational success was initiated on January 14, 1952 by Late V. Kumarasamy, M.P. It was first named as Mahalir M.V and started its services with 14 students and three Teachers. Miss. Balambikai Kanagasabai was in office as the first Principal.

The school office complex was constructed and declared open on November 28, 1953 by the Gover nor General Soulbery G. C. M. G. O – BE, MC. The Arts, Commerce and Science streams commenced in 1963, 1984 and 1992 re s p e c t ive l y. C o n s e q u e n t l y, Mahalir M. V was upgraded to a 1AB School and named as “Ladies College” in 1996. The school had been producing good results, inculcating knowledge, skill and ethics from then onwards.

Unfortunately, the school was completely damaged and closed in 2000 due to the civil war which prevailed in the country and temporarily functioned at “Talent Institute” till 2002. The renovation commenced in 2003, funded by vari- ous philanthropic institutions such as GTZ, PSED, GCP Project, SDC, GEP II Project, OGA, World Vision and UNICEF. The school management is striving hard to bring out an aesthetic environment to the school in order to ameliorate the learning process and to draw students’ interest in education. They also organise many programmes to create awareness among the parents in the direc- tion of educating their children.

Chavakachcheri Ladies College encourages students to participate in several competitions and programmes in order to prepare them to face the challenges of the modern world. Some of the great achievements of the students reveal the progress of Chavakachcheri Ladies College.

Annually students gain excellent results in all Grade 5, G. C. E. ( O/ L) and G.C.E. (A/L) examinations. Furthermore, many students get 3A’s in the G.C.E (A/L) Arts stream and have entered universities in the recent years.

They have brought glory to the school in many extra activities as well. In 2011 a Grade 5 student secured 2nd place in Provincial English Day competition and participated in the National level competition. Another student from G.C.E (A/L) secured 1st place in Provincial Tamil Day competition and took part in the National Level in 2012.

In 2010, two Girl Guides joined the trip to Malaysia to mark the centenary celebration of ‘ Guides’. In 2013 Chavakachcheri Ladies College was awarded a Silver medal for the Mother-Sri Lanka Project.

CLC students consistently procure championships in Badminton and Table tennis at Zonal level competition.

In the course of progress Ladies’ College with 41 teachers and 593 students under the leadership of Mrs. L. Mugunthan, the principal of the institution, has taken many steps to enhance the facilities of the Learning- Teaching process.

The E- Learning system to teach mathematics and science subject for G.C.E (O/L) students is to be introduced next year. They hope that it would enrich childrens’ knowledge and increase their interest in learning.

In the remarkable progress of 62 years, Chavakachcheri ladies’ College, the only girls’ college in Thenmaradchy has been shining brightly and rendering its educational and cultural services to create competent female citizens in the society.
