Pearson-Edexcel holds successful leadership programme for student leaders

-

Due to popular demand, PearsonEdexcel successfully hosted a leadership workshop for student prefects on October 23rd at the BMICH.

Themed “Inspiring Tomorrow’s leaders today” the event followed the success of a previous programme held in 2012.

Pearson- Edexcel firmly believes in the importance of cultivating leadership qualities, beyond achieving academic excellence. Therefore, in addition to the regular qualification awareness prog rams and principals’ forums they organise, Pearson-Edexcel periodically holds l eadership programmes in order to encourage students to be wellrounded.

The workshop was tailored towards Advanced Level prefects to create awareness about the essentials of leadership and teamwork. It also aimed to provide assistance in transforming them into successful and contributing members of society.

Several students who attended the session said they had gained valuable advice from the experience.

“This training was very useful for us. It motivated us to influence our peers to be leaders as well and I wish that there would be another session like this,” said P. Goushique Jonathan from E a s t e r n Inter nat i o n a l College in Batticaloa.

It was impressively good, and a lot of useful advice was given. I am grateful that there is an organization like this to help make better leaders in the future and also grateful for getting an opportunity to

experience it

Others praised the interactivity of the session.

“What I liked most about the training was the involvement of all the students in the activities. I had a great time here. I enjoyed all the activities and I hope it will help me to go a long way in the future,” commented Thubiga Jeyaseelan from Angel International School in Manipay, Jaffna.

“It was impressively good, and a lot of useful advice was given. I am grateful that there is an organization like this to help make better leaders in the future and also grateful for getting an opportunity to experience it,” said Uvindi Jayathilake, a participant from Asian International School.

Chaminda K Vithanage from the International School, Galle also spoke of the importance of the session.

“In my point of view this is a very important program because today almost all the students have the knowledge but they don’t have the ability to lead a team. Therefore this would help them to play an active role in whatever the field they choose in the future,” Vithanage said.

The leadership programme was conducted by leadership trainers Mr. David Shaw and Mr. Matthew Anderson.

Mr. Shaw currently serves as the President of the Unicorn Applied Research Collaboration (Unicorn ARC) a think- tank that delivers solutions in leadership, organisation, change and influence, as well as trauma, negotiation and crisis. He is also a visiting professor at the Aberdeen Business School, part of the Robert Gordon University and lectures on their MBA course.

Mr. Anderson is the VicePresident for Unicorn ARC. He has been engaged in international leadership development and organisational influence for many years in different sectors.
