Uduppiddy Girl’s College is situated in Uduppiddy, which is in the famous Vadamaradchy area in the Jaffna District. It is a leading Girls’ School which was established by the American Missionaries as the second College constructed only for Girls in Asia. It was established according to instructions made at the meeting on July 6, 1866, at Vaddukkoddai.

Rev. J. S Smith and his wife established the school on May 7, 1868. At that time there were only 17 students at the school, and Lady Miss. Townsend was made the Principal. She worked hard during the years 1868 – 1879 to bring up the school.

After that, Lady Mrs. R. C. N. Hastings (1882 - 1891), Mrs. Brown ( 1895 - 1905), Mrs. Hitchcock ( 1908 - 1911) , Mrs Uward, Mrs. Houston, Mrs. Miller, the missionaries took the responsibility to be principals of the school and conducted the events with great concern. For nearly 50 years they took great care and dedication to up lift the standard of the school.

From 1934, the Ladies from Sri Lanka were made principals. Firstly Miss. K. Mathiyaparanam was appointed as the Principal, during her period ( 1934 - 1945) she took great care in every activity and made the path to lead a peaceful and respectful life.

After she was transferred Miss. G. Lee Vanniasingam (1946 - 1959) filled the gap. She was one of the best principals of the school and made the school perfect in discipline, education and in every aspect in order to the benefit the child.

In 1960 Miss. R. J. Mann, who was the Deputy Principal during Miss. G. Lee Vanniashingam’s period, was appointed as the principal. Her exemplary conduct, dynamic personality continued to sink into every nook and corner of the institution. Due to her untiring efforts, aspects such as Dance, Music, Drill, Drama, Band guiding etc., thrived and the school was upgraded. Most of the parents will never forget her services and highly respects her even today. In 1974 she was transferred.

Mrs. K. Ratnasamy was appointed as principal from 1975 - 1978. Even though, she served for a short period, her efforts were highly appreciated. During her period, the A/ L Science stream was initiated and the Dental Clinic for school children in the area was constructed.

During the period 1978 - 1993 Mrs. P. Rajendrasingam, an old student of this college became the principal. She was also a dedicated Principal, who sacrificed quite a lot of her time to build up the personality and skills of the children. She started the A/ L Union, the Old Girl’s Association and she made Dr. V. C. Thurairajah, the vice chancellor of the Jaffna University as the patron of t he O. G. A . Unfortunately the college faced a lot of unwanted problems and most of the buildings were destroyed. The students studied under the shade of trees. Bye and bye they were rebuilt again. Actually she worked very hard to see that everything was in ship shape condition. To date too, the OGA helps the school financially.

From 1993 - 2010, Mrs. R. Kuddithamby was appointed as the principal of the college. She took keen interest to construct new buildings, with the help of the funds of the department. She took great responsibility in moulding the students with great personality and good behaviour. The intellect power of administration, and family background made her a good principal of the college. During her period the school regained the beauty of the olden days.

She was promoted in 2010 as ADE at the Zonal Education Office, Vadamaradchy. Then the Deputy Principal Mrs. L. N. Josseph became the principal. Her lovable service, with the help of the almighty, ended up on 13.11.2012. She too, worked hard for the school with the help of the OGA. During her period a new entrance for the college and pavilion was constructed at the ground. Even now she is helping the school in various ways.

Then Mrs. G. Sethurajah was appointed as the principal of the college. She too, is working too hard to promote the standard of the college and the achievements of the children. For the development of the college she discussed with the SDC, OGA etc., to uplift the standard and discipline of the college. She is very interested in maintaining the aesthetic beauty of the school, playground, canteen etc. In July 16. 2014, Mrs. N. Chandrasegaram was appointed as the principal of the college. She worked for a short period (41 days). Yet, she rendered an excellent service to the college. She retired on July 25. 2014.

Again Mrs. G. Sethurajah was made as the principal of the college from 27.07.2014. Now she is working with great dedication. With the services of all the past and present principals and academic staff, Uduppiddy Girl’s College reached a great height in its long journey.
