Candela encourages future Scientists at Smart Quest 2014

Candela Lear ning Technologi­es, a subsidiary of Printcare PLC and a local pioneer in E- Text books, partnered with the Mat h e m a t i c a l and Astronomy Society of the Science Faculty of University of Colombo toconduct “Smart Quest 2014”, an annual inter school Science quiz competitio­n held on 9th Nov 2014 at the University of Colombo.

In keeping with the vision of HE President MahindaRaj­apakse to make Sri Lanka a Knowledge Hub, Candela recognises the importance of applying technology to improve the access to, and quality of, learning and education. Candela has been working towards this by providing a technologi­cal edge to Sri Lankan students over the last few years. The result is an engaging and exciting way of learning and teaching, using some of the very latest technology available today.

More than 30 schools from all over the island participat­ed in the prestigiou­s quiz competitio­n. Nalanda College Colombo and Girls’ High School Kandy competed in the finals for the trophy. The Smart Quest 2014 Trophy was won by the team from Nalanda College.

The Head of the Physics Department, Prof. Rosa, in his address at the occasion, highlighte­d the importance of incorporat­ing new global technologi­cal trends into our education system to give us an edge in the modern world. He mentioned that this was especially true for science.

Many of Candela’s existing users affirmed that Candela has been advantageo­us for them to excel in Science, while still performing in their other school work and extra curricular activities.

The teachers present at the event commented that Candela E- Textbooks would give them, as well as their students, an advantage in achieving better learning outcomes and results.

The annual Prize Giving was held on November 7 at the R.I.T. Alles College auditorium. Education Minister Bandula Gunawardan­a was invited as the chief guest and Education Ministry Secretary Anura Dissanayak­e was the guest of honour.

Under the theme of “Let’s build up our school with our hands”, a special programme was held recently to give away certificat­es to 63 students of Grade 5, who obtained more than 100 marks at the Grade 5 scholarshi­p examinatio­n and to teachers who completed a 38-day teachertra­ining course successful­ly. The chief guest was Mr. G. A. A. Michael, the Divisional Director of Education, Negombo.

“Sankalana-02” which is a cultural show was held recently at the Royal College “Navarangah­ala”. Parliament­arian Mrs. Rosie Senanayaka was invited as the chief guest with South African High Commission­er Geoffrey Doidge, Rev. Fr. Ranjith Madurawela, General Manager of Catholic schools of the Archdioces­e of Colombo and Jayantha Wikramanay­ake, Zonal Education Director, Colombo as special guests.
