Ranasinghe and Fernando bag double TT crowns

Young table tennis prodigies Udaya Ranasinghe of Vidyartha College and Chamathsar­a Fernando of Visakha Vidyalaya bagged double crowns at the Chrys Gunaratne Memorial Open All- Island Ranking Table Tennis Championsh­ip held at the Lumbini College Indoor Complex in Colombo recently.

Udaya won the Men’s Open Singles and Under- 18 Boys’ Singles while Chamathsar­a went on to secure the championsh­ip titles of Under- 18 and Under-15 Girls’ Singles events.

Udaya beat top ranked Rohan Sirisena of Stag Table Tennis Academy by 4 sets to 3 in a thrilling final in the Men’s Open Singles final after recording a comfortabl­e 3- 1 win against school- mate Krishan Wickramara­tne in the Under-18 Boy’s Singles final.

Sanduni Prabuddhik­a (Prajapathi Gothami BMV Ambalangod­a) beat Chathumi Yoveena (Dharmasoka College Ambalangod­a) 3-0 (11/3, 11/5, 11/9) pionship. Chameera Ginige of University of Sri Jayewarden­epura recorded a comfortabl­e 3- 1 victory against Chinthaka Ekanayake of Vidyartha College in the Under-21 Boy’s Singles final. The Under-21 Girl’s Singles title was won by Ruvini Kannangara of Musaeus College who recorded an effortless 3-0 victory against Muthumali Priyadarsh­ani of Sri D ev a n a n d a College Ambalangod­a.

Chamathsar­a bagged her double by beating Sheshala Bandara of Mahamaya Girls’ School by 3-1 in the Under-18 Girls’ Singles final while she went on to easily defeat Imasha de Silva of Dhar masoka Colle g e Ambalangod­a by 3-0 in the Under-15 Girls’ Singles final. Dinesh Kavishka of Vidyartha College Kandy beat P. D. U. Tennekoon of Dharmaraja College Kandy in straight sets to win the Under15 Boy’s Singles title.

Dewmith Weerasena of Lyceum Internatio­nal School Nugegoda humbled Veron de Silva of Dharmasoka College Ambalangod­a by 3-0 to bag the Under-12 Boys’ Singles championsh­ip while the Girls’ Singles title of the same age category was snatched by Sanduni Prabuddhik­a of Prajapathi Gothami Balika Vidyalaya who recorded a spectacula­r 3- 2 victory against teammate D. H. Kolambage, to win her second title of the competitio­n. Chanuka Sri Bandara of St. Mary’s College Kegalle had the honour of winning the Under-10 Boy’s Single championsh­ip beating Dhanushka Wijesinghe of Kingswood College Kandy by 3-1 while Sanduni Prabuddhik­a’s first title came after she defeated Chathuni Yoveena of Dhar masoka Colle g e Ambalangod­a in straight sets in the Under-10 Girls’ Singles final. The two- day tournament, organised by the Table Tennis Associatio­n of Sri Lanka, was held on October 4 and 5.
