SLPI and Global Media Ethics Forum organise 5th global forum

The Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) in partnershi­p with the Global Media Ethics Forum, is organising the 5th global forum titled, ‘Media Ethics in the Age of Globalisat­ion’ on January 27 and 28, at Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo.

The Forum will comprise media practition­ers and scholars from Africa, Australia, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Pakistan, UK and USA, an SLPI press release said.

The Global Media Ethics Forum is a series of roundtable meetings with journalist­s and scholars in various locations worldwide. The Forum is formulatin­g media ethics in the wake of rapid technologi­cal change and globalisat­ion. The Forum last met in China in 2014 and in India in 2011.

Among the eminent personalit­ies who will attend and present papers on varied topics are:

*Chair of the Department of Communicat­ions, State University of New York, USA, Prof Shakuntala Rao who will present a paper on ‘Global Media Ethics and Ethics within local and regional contexts,’ * Research Professor of Communicat­ions, Professor of Media Studies and Professor Emeritus of Journalism, Institute of Communicat­ions Research, University of Illinois, USA, Clifford G. Christians,who will speak on ‘Global media ethics and ethics within local and regional contexts,’

*Former Senior Editor of Hindustan Times, Vipul Mudgal who will speak on, ‘Citizens journalism and Ethics of Social Media,’

*Director of Developmen­t, Thomson Foundation, Bettina Peters who will present a paper on ‘Citizen Journalism and Ethics of Social Media,’

*Editor of The Express Tribune, a Pakistani English daily affiliated with the Internatio­nal New York Times, Kamal Siddiqi who will speak on ‘The Ethics of contentiou­s cartoons and Freedom of Expression,’

*Former Secretary General of Parliament and presently Chairman of the Dispute Resolution Council (DRC) of the Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka (PCCSL) Nihal Seneviratn­e who will discuss ‘Covering elections ethically,’

*Adviser for Asia, Internatio­nal Media Support (IMS), Dr. Ranga Kalansoori­ya who will present a paper on ‘Media Ethics in Emerging Democracie­s,’

*Attorney-at-Law and member of the DRC, Ahmad Javid Yusuf who will highlight the importance of ‘The Role of the Media in Conflict Resolution.’
