Trinity fought back after having conceded a first inning lead to Wesley to record an outright win by three wickets in the Under 19 interschool cricket encounter concluded at the Bloomfield ground in Reid Avenue yesterday.

The architect of Trinity’s win was their skipper and right spinner Raveen Sayer who was supported by left-arm spinner Shanmuganathan Shanogeeth which laid the foundation.

Wesley dominated to have Trinity struggling and in a spot of bother when play ended on day one having made a modest score of 166 and then sending them reeling on 55 for 5.

Trinity’s problems got much worse when play began on the second day as they lasted only 12.3 overs, being skittled out for a mea- ger 89. This was their lowest score in the ongoing schools cricket season. Andrew Parais did the damage with an impressive bowling figure of 6 for 40.

But Trinity clawed their way back with the right and left arm spin combination of skipper Raveen Sayer who ended with figures of 5 for 19 and Shanmuganathan Shanogeeth grabbing three, the duo sent the Wesleyites reeling to a meager 76.

Trinity chasing 154 runs for victory were cruising well on 76 for 1 before they lost four quick wickets and slid to 101 for 5. But some sensible batting by the late order enabled them to reach the target in the 40th over.

Trinity has so far played 11 matches and are unbeaten and this was their seventh consecutive outright win.

St. Peter’s made to follow on with a deficit of 111 runs was guided by a fine knock of 91 by Lakshina Rodrigo which helped them end day two on 298.

Half tons by skipper Pathum Madusanka who was unfortunate to miss out on a ton and Aravinda Akurugoda enabled St. Joseph’s continuing from their overnight score of 169 for 5 to declare their innings on 256 for 9 in reply to Moratu MV’s 119 in the match played at Darley Road to record a first innings win.

The Rajans made an imposing 294, taking a lead of 128 and then forced the Nalanda batsmen to struggle for survival. When the game ended, they had barely wiped out the lead, but had lost six wickets in doing so. The match was played at Lake View. Overnight batsmen Kavinda Ratnayake made a pleasing half century. Skipper Tharusha Weragoda emerged from the shadows to contribute substantially. Pacie Lahiru Sa- marakoon who had a good game with the ball (six wickets) swung his bat lustily to make 39.
