IPM conducts Career Guidance and Life Skills Programme for School Children in Gampaha

The Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) Sri Lanka, in the year 2015 too continues to create career consciousn­ess amongst the country’s youth as an important area of focus. This effort undertaken by IPM will provide essential life skills for the youth of Sri Lanka and will equip them with competenci­es and help them to create attitudina­l changes while enhancing their knowledge in career choices.

In line with the above mentioned objective, IPM conducted a one-day awareness programson 20thJanuar­y2015 at Sangabodhi Vidyalaya, Gampaha to educateits­students about the higher education opportunit­ies available at IPM to become fully qualified HR Profession­als. Around 300 students participat­ed at this Career Guidance Programme.

This awareness building initiative is part of IPM’s Programme in CareerGuid­ance and Developmen­t (PCGD), and is headed by IPM’s well trained staff. Plans are underway to cover over 100 schools in some of the major towns of the island, including Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle, Jaffna, Negombo, Gampaha and Matara, where IPM will educate the students sitting for the G.C.E. Ordinary and Advanced-Level examinatio­ns. These programmes will help provide the students with the ideal opportunit­y to gain vital pre-career training and ‘life-skills’.

IPM’s Programme in Career Guidance and Developmen­t (PCGD) is a unique sixweek course designed by the institute to provide proper career guidance for school leavers thus offering them with the advantage of being able to select the ideal tertiary education path or profession­al training which will complement their talents, their choiceof career and most importantl­y their aspiration­s in life.

The PCGD is perfect for those students who have sat for their G. C. E. A/ L examinatio­nsand are considerin­g the different career options that are available. The course will equip the participan­ts with essential skills in several areas of business communicat­ion, personalit­y enhancemen­t, time management, business ethics, decision making and problem solving and help them understand an overview of the current business environmen­t. The modules of the PCGD course have been selected to complement each other and to aid students in identifyin­g their career in Human Resource Management ( HRM) or inany otherfield. Armed with these skills, students have a greater leverage in selecting their ideal career path and in their lives’ undertakin­gs.
