Fishing trip ends in disaster

The Negombo police told the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths (Siri Jayantha Wickremara­tne) that a 20-year-old man of Dalupotha- was electrocut­ed while fishing at the Negombo lagoon on Monday.

Akalanka Perera a friend of the victim giving evidence said the victim, Lalith Ravishanka Jayawarden­a, along with four friends had been fishing in the Negombo lagoon. He said the victim’s fishing line had got entangled with an electric wire when he cast his line and resulted in his receiving an electric shock. The victim had fallen into the water. He added that the victim’s rod did not have a protective cover.Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Rahul Haq who conducted the postmortem determined death was caused by shock as a result of electrocut­ion.

The Inquirer into Sudden Deaths recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Sergeant Indrajith Wickremara­tne of the Negombo police led the evidence.
