Founded in 1964 by the New South Wales Gover nment, Macquarie was the third university to be established in the metropolitan area of Sydney. It is consistently ranked as one of the best universities in Australia and has an international reputation for being Australia’s best modern university.

Macqaurie ranks amongst the top 300 universities in the World (QS, 2014) and was awarded five stars in the international QS Stars rating system for its performance in: graduate employability, teaching, research, facilities, innovation, internationalisation, access and specialist subjects. It is one of only 5 Australian universities to receive 5 stars in all categories.
In 2014, Times Higher Education ( THE) ranked Macquarie University the No. 9 most international university in the world.
The Macquarie Graduate School of Management MBA is ranked amongst the Top 100 Business Schools in the world by the Financial Times in Jan 2015 and also the Number 1 MBA in Australia.
Macquarie is ranked fifth in Australia for international research publication collaborations and fourth for research publications per academic staff member. Three disciplines at Macquarie - earth sciences, physical sciences and environmental sciences - achieved the maximum rating (‘well above world standard’) in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation.
