Honours for four top sports personalit­ies of Dickwella

The Dickwella Pradeshiya Sabha honoured four of its constituen­ts, Rohana Wickremasi­nghe, K W Kasun Kithsen, K H Keerthi Kumara and D W P Ranilatha for their contributi­ons in bringing glory to Dickwella in the field of sports.

Citations that were read out stated that, the honour was bestowed on Rohana Wickremasi­nghe a teacher by profession for winning gold medals for the Javelin throw, discuss throw, putt shot, 100 meters and 400 metres events at a meet held in Chennai and as a founder member of the Jolly Boys softball cricket team who have won many a championsh­ip bringing glory to Dickwella.

To Kasun Kithsen for bringing glory to Dickwella by winning gold medal for the 800 metres and silver medal for the 1500 metre events in 1979 when he was a student of Vijitha Central College and by serving his alma mater as a PTI and a teacher of mathematic­s since 1984 and for his contributi­ons as composer and writer and lyricist

Captain K H Keerthi Kumara won a gold medal for the 800 metre event at the National Sports Festival representi­ng Vijitha Central College in 1986. After joining his alma mater as a PTI in 1990 Keerthi Kumara is credited for mentoring Sri Lanka's champion high jumper Manjula Kumar of Olympic fame.

D V P Ranilatha was awarded this coveted award for bringing glory to Dickwella as a long jumper of repute in her school days who was awarded university colours for establishi­ng a record for the long jump event in 1992 which stands to this day and for the service she has rendered as a teacher after she graduated with a honours degree in Economics.
