- Establishing a Threefold Partnership Sri Lanka: the Right Place to be in Part of the Global Vision

An air of camaraderie and the sound of friendly banter welcomed me as I walked in to meet Timothy Angle, Dean, California State University, Monterey Bay ( CSUMB), David Coltman, Executive Director, Pathway and Vo c a t i o n a l Education of the University of Swinburne and Peter Burgess, Deputy Chair of the Academic Board of Nawaloka College of Higher Studies. All were in Colombo for a landmark occasion.

CSUMB is a well-recognized university with similar values. The original partnership between CSUMB and Swinburne was established two to three years ago. David said

The high powered academics present, as well as the institutions represented were impressive. I was curious to know as to why this three - fold partnership has been forged. “CSUMB is a well- recognized university with similar values. The original partnership between CSUMB and Swinburne was established two to three years ago.” David said. “It was an opportunity to add value and to expand to new horizons.” Peter added. It was then stated that this partnership will provide more opportunities for students to study in new international locations.

While the new global opportunities would add value to the Sri Lankan students who study at NCHS, ‘ why was Sri Lanka chosen?’, I wondered.

“There is significant growth of stability in the country. The economic boom is happening. The government demonstrates keen desire to have partnerships with foreign institutes”, Peter explained. “It is the right place to be in” David said as he nodded in agreement. “It is for these reasons that CSUMB has come to Sri Lanka!” Timothy added.

The venture will provide dual expansion. It was then explained that the objective lies in the prospects of expansion within California, as well as across the globe.

“The students who join NCHS will directly enroll and be recognized as students at CSUMB. Upon completing 2 years of studies at NCHS students will transfer to CSUMB to complete their chosen degrees”, Tim explained. The students will thereby be given a conditional offer to CSUMB at the time of enrolment. Therefore, the students will be enrolled with CSUMB and they will be a part of CSUMB from first day at NCHS.

“It is a part of the global vision to take Swinburne global. The pathway programs are the catalyst” David said. “We really love this model as there is room for growth and development in a structured way.” Tim said. He also said that he would be delighted to have CSUMB professors coming to Sri Lanka for guest lectures and enhance the globalization of the program. David reiterated this sentiment by adding that peer teaching opportunities and staff exchange programs have already been discussed.

“This collaboration is a truly unique opportunity. This is just the beginning. Prospects for growth are strong ” Tim emphasized
