MBA –Kelaniya: Your Passport to a World of Opportunities

-

The Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, which was added to the University of Kelaniya in 1995, is the youngest Faculty at the University. Despite its relative youth, the Faculty has recorded steady and rapid growth over the years and offers different programmes of study including undergraduate and masters degrees as well as diplomas. With 10 undergraduate programmes including 2 exter nal degrees and 6 masters programmes including Master of Business Administration ( MBA), the courses are popular among the students. Dr. D. M. Semasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies stated that due to the popularity of its programmes and the delivery, the Faculty has witnessed a huge enrolment for all programmes for the year 2015.

The Faculty currently comprises five Departments: Department of Commerce and Financial Management, Department of Human Resource Management, Department of Accountancy, Department o f Marketing Management and Department of Finance.

The MBA programme which was introduced in 2005 with the collaboration of the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, is one of the most popular programmes at the Faculty. With many MBA graduates produced within 6 batches, the 7th and the 8th batch is currently on- going. The programme offers specializations in major areas such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Business Technology and Human Resource Management. The Faculty holds the highest employment rate among Sri Lankan universities and its courses are highly popular among the industry.

The MBA programme is unique in that it is the only MBA programme currently offered in Sri Lanka that has introduced a foreign training component. Furthermore, from the year 2014, the Faculty has introduced foreign students to the programme, further giving the students to interact with students from various cultural and religious backgrounds, improvising their cross- cultural awareness.

The Faculty is also the pioneer in introducing the Learning Management System (LMS) within the University. The LMS can be accessed anywhere and students can get lecture notes, contact the lecturers or other students, submit assignments and even take some exams online through the LMS.

The course will be conducted by both internal academics at the University itself and industry experts. Majority of the lecture panel are PhD holders of reputed universities in the world and members of reputed professional bodies. The lectures will be conducted employing a variety of studentcentered teaching methods and students will be required to make presentations which they will later present in front of their peers and lecturers. The students are also given state-of-the art facilities and access to the well stocked library.

In addition to assignments, case studies and mid term examinations, there is also a thesis component, and students are required to complete their research project within the last semester. Dr. Semasinghe stated that the MBA programme has always been completed on schedule as the students are prompt in completing the research projects before the deadline. The thesis component is compulsory for every student, as the Faculty believes in not just giving an education to the students but for the students to also contribute to the industry.

Rather than traveling overseas to receive the MBA, students can enrol in the MBA programme at the University of Kelaniya, which would ensure that the students would receive a quality MBA from a reputed University within the country. Another advantage for the students is that pursuing their MBA degree at the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies at the University of Kelaniya is that the overall expenses would be far more affordable compared with the expenses required to pursue an overseas MBA programme. Additionally, the MBA offered by the Faculty is recognised by the industry experts and the industry itself.

The 9th batch of the MBA programme will commence in August, 2015 and the deadline to submit the applications is 10th June, 2015. For more information visit
