Elle big match in Kalutara

-

To impart that big match feeling in cricket, limited to well established and popular schools, two schools from the coastal city of Kalutara summed up with a new venture. The adaptation of Elle, a sport traditionally played only in Sri Lanka and similar to baseball.

The past pupils’ associations of Roman Catholic School Katukurunda and St. Mary’s College Maggona, as planned months ago, continued what they initiated last year by moving forward with the ‘ Battle on the Beach’ Elle encounter between both schools.

This Elle game was played for the first ever time last year by the two schools and after its success the groups of past pupils seriously considered on the possibilities of continuing the match as an annual encounter, under a big match sort of atmosphere. The only difference was the sport, instead of cricket, it was Elle.

The organisers state that since both schools are facing difficulties at even taking up and continuing cricket as a sport, they explored the importance of Elle, as a local sport. In addition the inaugural encounter was we l l received by both – the past and present students of both schools as well as the growing popularity of the sport in the southern coastal belt after last year’s game.

“The encounter is known as ‘ Battle on the Beach 2’. As it was played last year the games were played on the beach of Uswella in Maggona last Saturday. It’s really encouraging to have everyone backing us and we take pride in being the two schools initiating a big match of this sort, which could be historical as well”.
