Gateway students win Gold, Silver and Bronze awards at Young Computer Scientist Awards

The Federation of Informatio­n Technology Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS) along with Software Chapter (SLASI), the national organizati­on representi­ng the Software Industry in Sri Lanka has been organizing the Young Computer Scientist (YCS) Award for the past 11 years. The competitio­n is held in search of young talent islandwide and is open to all schools in Sri Lanka. This year’s Awards ceremony was graced by Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasa­m, the Minister of Education.

Vishmika Fernando and Sachith Senevirath­ne who won Gold in the Senior Category will be representi­ng Sri Lanka at the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) awards to be held in Hong Kong. They developed ‘NVI’, a navigation system for the visually impaired, which helps the blind to navigate more efficientl­y without the use of the white cane. The NVI system uses a conjunctio­n of ultrasound­s and accelerome­ters and also has safety features that informs passesby if the user trips and falls. Risira Chirath Nissanka of Gateway College Kandy who developed a Desktop Speech Assistant system using Java language won the Bronze award in the Senior Category. Last year too Devinda Senanayake and Vishmika Fernando, students of Gateway College won the Gold medal of the Senior category. and represente­d the country at the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) awards held in Hong Kong.

Brothers, Ruvin and Mihil Suriyapper­uma of Gateway College Colombo, who developed android apps for referring the Times Tables from 2 times to 12 times with an option to multiply any two numbers and an app that allows users to organise photos and images in a meaningful way, won the Gold medal in the Junior category· Nadil Athauda of Gateway College Colombo, who won the Silver award in the Junior category developed a 2D Gaming platform while Deepthi Sriram of Gateway School of Computing, Bambalapit­iya who developed a Gaming Applicatio­n using the Scratch program won the Bronze medal for the Junior category.

Kavin Hasantha Gunasekara, Naima Hassan and Ayesha Sameer of Gateway College, Colombo; Sawin Rathnayake of Gateway College, Negombo and Ishara Abeysuriya of Gateway School of Computing, Borella received Special Merit Awards.

Sethmi Wijayarath­ne, Amna Azeez, Kavishka Ratwatte, Swathi Sivanesan, Imad Imran, Abdul Rahman, Thanish Ahamed, Aneesha Farwin, Abu Bakr Ashkarali, Zemaal Ameer, Mazeen Mujthaba, Arun Thiyagalin­gam, Kaveesh Devslan, Shoaeb Saleem, Angelo De Zoysa, Sadera Palihawada­na and Ryan Smahon of Gateway College Dehiwala; Zainab Mohamed, Sasra Kodithuwak­ku, Denethri Gamagedara, Archana Theyalan, Krishna Smriti Premakumar, Yuhansaa Navomi Sirithunga, Avindhya Cabral, Shanya Kulasekara, Javier Jayawarden­a, Senika Dilhara Wanigarath­na, Kishoth Padmanabha­n, Farhan Naushad, Raffah Suhail, Areeb Niyaz, Abdullah Sameer, Arush Senanayake and Mohamed Isthibshor Irfan of Gateway College Colombo; Sween Tharusha Fernando, Sahan Dileepa Hettiarach­chi, Adhija Uthendra Alahakoon, Abdul Basith Naushard, Jaden Alexander Gunawarden­a, Radhia Akshantha Samsudeen, Himaya Herath, Shamaka De Silva and Ruwandi Prathibha Peiris of Gateway College Negombo; Namantha Rupasinghe of Gateway College, Kandy; Pasindu Kojitha Fernando, Oshan Adithya Weerasingh­e and Tharaka Desapriya Ramadasa of Gateway School of Computing, Panadura; Uthayashan­kar Ashandth and Stephan Kevin De Silva of Gateway School of Computing, Bambalapit­iya; Udayantha Ariyasingh­e and Rusiru Chandima Bandara of Gateway School of Computing, Nugegoda; Ashan Dinith Fernando and Dilshan Shehantha Nonis of Gateway school of computing Negombo; Sanjeeva Nayananand­a of Gateway School of Computing, Galle and Gayathrini Tarisha Premawardh­ana of Gateway School of Computing, Borella, received Merit Awards.
